    He is.

Campillo beats Shumenov by 12 rounds of exciting two-way action!

    From Daniyar Karimzhan

WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo of Spain (19-2, 6 KOs) retained his title for the first time with a hard-fought, thrilling twelve-round unanimous decision over sensational Kazakh prospect Beibut Shumenov (8-1, 6 KOs). Shumenov, WBO #6, WBA #9 and WBC #15 175lber in the world, fighting for the major belt in his ninth fight as a pro, started the bout aggressively, throwing punches in bunches but mostly to the block of his opponent. Campillo was fighting smoothly, trying to counter the challenger from the distance and displaying savvy boxing skills in controlling the tempo. Kazakh Shumenov was visibly tired at the halfmark of the fight but dug deep to catch the second wind as the collision went on. In round nine already fatigued but yet powerful Shumenov floored the champion with a hard left to the chin. Campillo, seemingly on the brink of defeat, was able to regroup and fought back with the zeal. Championship rounds were back-and-fourth but the Spaniard solidified his position with a wicked left hook to the body that put Shumenov down early in the twelfth. At the end of the day, all three judges saw the battle in a favor of the defending titlist: 114-112, 114-112 and 114-113 – for Campillo. Fightnews reporter saw it 113-113 a draw. All in all, an exciting two-way action and a strong effort by 25-year old Shumenov.

Big time props to Campillo for taking this fight and putting on what sounds like a great performance- perhaps his win vs Garay was no fluke after all!

Also, Shumenov get alot of credit from me because he promoted this fight, in his home country, and could've had every opportunity to set up a hometown decision in what sounds like an extremely close fight; but Campillo went to Kazakhstan and didn't get screwed. Says alot about Shumenov's ethics.

Yeah, no real loser here. The fans saw a seemingly great fight, despite their guy lost. Campillo soldified his legit champ status winning the 2nd decision in the opponent's backyard vs. good opposition, and Shumenov, although failed to pick up a title inside 10 pro fights, at 8-1 he already has a lot of valuable experience and NO WAY he's stopping until he picks up a title.

If you have to lose a pro fight, do it early, do it in exciting, two-sided, close fashion and learn from it, and that's exactly what Shumenov did.

Why not have a Campillo-Erdei unification and something like Shumenov-Brahmer on the undercard with the winners fighting each other in 2010?

Too soon for Beibut.. he didn't have enough time to learn the pro game and build to the 12 round limit it sounds.. I know he went it before, but against guys not as good as Campillo.

Thats it basically what i would imagine happening was that Beibut ran out of steam

thats how Campillo won the strap aswell

Hes a handy boxer no doubt and very well conditioned but i think he wont last long as a champ

Campillo awarded controversial decision against game Shumenov?
    http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=20835&more=1

An article from the main page is talking about controversy, but I don't see no author of the article and it seems it's the Shumenovs' press release, so we can question their objectivity (that doesn't mean it wasn't controversial, it's just not an independent source). Nevertheless, we should get a copy of the fight and judge for ourselves. Hopefully it'll be uploaded somewhere very soon! :thumbsup

Personally, I think he may have been pulling himself in too many different directions being co-head of his own promotion and alternating between basing himself out of Las Vegas and Kazakhstan. I'd like to see him focus completely on improving his boxing, out of one location, and letting his brother take over more of the promotional side of things for now. In a fight where the final round makes the difference between winning and losing (he wins the 12th, he's champion right now), sometimes that's all it takes.

Since Beibut doesn't want to fight longer than a handful of years, he can always go back to focus on the business side of things later.

It's tough enough to advance as fast as he has, and that's if they were focusing solely on fighting full time. It's a tall order to be pulled in that many different directions and improve enough defeat the beltholders of the world- that's why we typically see more experienced fighters go into the promotional side well after they've had championship experience.

Man, people really hype Shumenov on this site. Sounds like he failed his first real test.

He came within a round of beating a sitting titlist with less than 10 fights of experience. I'd hardly call that a failure.

He's the kind of fighter that deserves fans' support. I wish more fighters had his attitude when it came to making fights.

Campillo won two hard tough fights on the road, he's for real.

Next he should face Uzelkov, who already stopped him. Guess he would like the home advantage in this one.

It looks like he is not afraid of picking up a challenge and is active too. Maybe he can end up a big name in the division soon.
