He still looked pretty bad in the 1st round. It was the first time I’ve seen him get outjabbed in a very long time. And this was the 3rd fight in a row, where he looked as if he forgot how to throw a body shot. Abel needs to fix that, whether the next opponent is Canelo, Saunders or anyone else.
The fight was a joke, up there with some of the worst middleweight defences of the last 10 years IMO and it matters almost nothing to me that he smoked Vanes and I cant believe people are acting as if its some sort of statement. He had a mere flash knockdown against DJ, couldnt knock down Canelo, but he destroys a guy who shouldnt have even been approved as an opponent and people are celebrating and calling him a destroyer again. Seems ridiculous to me. Destroying guys like Vanes might appease the masses... but heres to hoping he can stop an actual top tier fighter before his career is over.
Except... hes not a current top 10 154lber. Being a top 10 guy 3 years ago or even 2 years ago doesnt make you one right now. Vanes is not ranked at 154 by credible rankings. Hes not top 10 anything.
It was an entirely expected demolition against a completely over matched opponent. If Vanes had been active going into the fight, and had maybe faced a middleweight of note before-hand, it might have been compelling. As it stands, it doesn't add very much at all to Golovkin's championship resume.
What do you mean by "natural"? They weighed basically the same on fight night. You mean Vanes isn't meant to compete with men his own size?
Two people weighing the same does not make them naturally the same size. To imply otherwise comes off disengenious.
Well, thats true. But i dont get the notion of it being that big of a difference in a fight. Ive sparred guys 20 pounds bigger and i feel it: my power is not as good, they punch way harder and the pressure is different. But its not like id get steamrolled.
I can understand considered criticism of GGG that he hasn't stopped a true top-tier yet, to a degree. But these arguments trying to find evidence of a downward slide in his performance that simply isn't there in sufficient amounts are getting more and more desperate. He fought 2 rounds FFS the second of which largely comprised of him beating the living daylights out of Vanes. Why would he try going to the body in round 1 (feeling out round), then round 2 where he smashed Vanes head back with an uppercut 30 seconds into the round which obviously hurt Vanes and set the inexorable path to his KO?
Ive beaten plenty of bigger guys in my time and sometimes prefer it but what happens at joe shmoe level is not the same as what happens at high level professional boxing level. At the high end level weight and dimensions make a big difference, which is why there is a reason very very very good fighters borderline kill themselves to make weights they dont belong at... its because to 99% of fighters out there, every bit of size matters. However that is going a bit off topic. My main point is simply that two people technically weighing the same thing doesnt make them naturally the same size. How big a role size played on the Vanes fight is debatable. Whats not, is that they arent naturally the same size. Imo though.
Even though Jacobs beat Sulecki I thought he looked vulnerable. Not sure what is going on with Jacobs but the fact that he didn't take out Sulecki would concern me if I were in Jacobs corner. Don't get me wrong, Sulecki is a talented fighter, maybe more talented than I give him credit but if, for example, Charlo or GGG fought Sulecki, he would be KO'd within 6. And Danny is 5 years younger than GGG.
Vanes would have probably beaten the count if Golovkin didn't punch him in the back of the head when he was down on the canvas.
