Can a boxer of Irish descent who isn't from Ireland or UK fight for the Irish title? Reading the article about Tyson Fury wanting to go for the Irish HW title on ESB even though he is British by nationality made me wonder this. I know Fury has Irish descent but he is from the UK. So I was wondering if all boxers of Irish descent could fight for an Irish boxing title? Like an American, African, Euro or Scandianvian(they're closer to Ireland so I assume some people there have Irish descent) could fight for the Irish title?

Unless there is a specific rule from the Irish Boxing Group that says it isn't allowed then I'll say yes he can.

There are a lot of fighters from different origins who fights for the North American Boxing Fed titles . . . just an example.

Yes, as long as a boxer has Irish heritage they can fight for the Irish title.

I like the idea of Irish Americans or other boxers of Irish descent fighting for the Irish title. It would spice things up a bit.

Our best prospect in Ireland today is a black man called Darren Sutherland[winner of a bronze medal at last Olympics].

isn't there the granny rule that once you can prove a grandparent is from ireland they are entitled to fight for an irish title.

Well their most capped football player ever had no Irish blood in him whatsoever, so I'm pretty sure that if you've got a great grandfather from Dublin you can fight for their titles.

Did Matthew Macklin not have the Irish Middleweight title before fighting for the Brittish one?

I'm sure a fighter can fight for the Irish title based on heritage even if he's not from there, I don't know if a fighter could hold two different national titles at the same time (e.g Brittish and Irish,) apart from that they probably wouldn't want to pay two sanctioning fees I don't think there is anything to stop them.

I think fighters can also fight for an EBA title if they are not even European just as long as they are officially based in a European country, but that's a bit off topic.
