I ask this question because after Yuriokis Gamboa fight against Darling Jimenez, a fight where Gamboa dominated Jimenez, Gamboa only had one negative in that fight and that was where he got knock down in the 4th round and now alot of folks want to claim that this kid is nothing but a hype job...

2nd example is Andre Berto he received a flash knockdown from Cosme Rivera and now the fans claim he is a KO waiting to happen. What I'm trying to say overall is that it's best to make your mistakes early in your career so when one starts to fight on a world class level he would know what to do when he might potentially be in trouble so what's everyone thoughts on this matter of fans expecting prospects to be flawless?

I just chalk it up to being green bro..
I don't take it to serious, Tho if they continue to show no improvement
or do not change in their next few fight's tho, eventualy that short coming will catch up to them
Once they step up the Comp level.

It really depends how much hype the prospect gets, if its too much and he makes a mistake, you can count on alot of people to be all over it.

If the prospect doesnt get too much hype and makes mistakes, you wont get as much people being all over it, ex. Dawson when he got dropped against Adamek.

    Its all about hype.

Gamboa is very flashy but he's going to get KO when he fights a real champion. He got drop and hurt but instead of covering up for a while he went straight back to his flashy hand down style. I was waiting to see what will happen if he gets tag again but it just never happen. There was some close one but nothing landed flush after that KD. When you're nice and fresh you can drop your hands but you have to know to cover up when you're in trouble.

Yeah but I chalk that up to being green, as a PRO.
(He is defo not green to boxing!!)

With a change of trainer and a proper transition to the pro style,
Gamboa should be alright. (IF he can make the adaption from AM to Pro?)

Yeah I understand where you're coming from some feel the hype should match what they see on TV.

It all depends on the exact situation.

Gamboa didn't get hurt at all. Berto did. Berto didn't dominate Cosme Rivera effortlessly like Gamboa did against a better fighter in Jiminez. He also has worse defense than Gamboa and is inferior in pretty much every single way. Berto is truly a KO waiting to happen.

"Prospects" getting done by gatekeepers and other up and comers is acceptable. Getting put down by South American journeymen fighting on three days notice is another issue...

the thing is that its much harder not to make mistakes at the championship level than at the prospect level.

I was surprised that Andre Berto got dropped in that Rivera... Then I remembered, in his last fight Rivera also dropped Joel Julio and nearly won that fight... But to Berto's credit, he came back and kept fighting and didn't seem gun shy.. Remember Guinn vs. Barrett and how that fight changed Guinn forever.. I think people kinda underestimate Cosme Rivera because of the Zab Judah fight and you expect everyone to blow by Cosme the same way Zab did...

Gamboa just needs to be in there with a dangerous puncher before he changes his mind and keeps his hands up... Fighting guys like Barrios, Valero, Linares in any order would do the trick... But I do agree that in Gamboa's case, he was thought to be something special, i guess the word that comes to mind is virtuoso... And he's able to get dropped like that... He'll receive harsh criticism...

Cotto got jacked up twice at 140lbs, look at where his career has gone. Still strong, All it takes to be a real champ is heart and determination. Gamboa has RIDICULOUS talent, and if he shows that he has mad heart, it is going to take a **** load more than just "a mistake" to beat him. Some of these people don't even think about the intangibles that play into a fight. Waiting for Gamboa to get KTFO, as if thats how simple it is lol. It won't be in Gamboa's case!

If you dont make mistakes how you gonna learn? That was one of the disappointing things about Naseem Hamed. He got comprehensively beaten and he could have returned as a much better fighter but his ego got the better of him I guess.
