Barry Hearn has just said in an interview that trainers don`t make fighters great, but great fighters make trainers great, I disagree,I feel D`Amato made M.Tyson what he because, an amazing counter/pressure fighter, Arcel did the same with Duran. Is Hearn right when he says Eubank Jr is a great fighter but still needs to listen to a little voice of experience, or is this the attitude towards boxing that has more or less cost him his career? He needs more than a little advise, he needs to be trained fundamentals properly, surely.
A trainer looks at his fighter and uses him to play on his strengths. Classic example is Klitscko, he used what he could be good at and was dominant for years despite having weaknesses. Opposite is Eubank, he has nobody there to teach him how to beat certain opponents and will only beat a certain type of fighter, the ones who let him throw a million punches.
I feel D'Amato made Tyson great as a result of the personal relationship the two had. I think Tyson could have been great with other trainers, Hell it was under Rooney that he had his great success. But I think it was being a father figure and making Tyson love boxing was D'Amato's real contribution to Tyson.
I am not sure where I stand on the whole matter, but some trainers mesh really well with certain fighters. They just compliment each other. Freddie Roach has Manny and Cotto. Two guys he perfected. He got Manny to use all of his strengths. Cotto seemed to be a bit lost between being a boxer and a brawler. Roach got him to settle down and become more of a boxer puncher. Roberto Garcia did wonders with Maidana. Look at the way he jabbed Floyd and created openings. Then look at Maidana aimlessly run after Khan. Two completely different fighters. The Reynoso family has done a wonderful job with Alvarez. If you watch them train you see that Alvarez is getting constantly corrected. Just non stop drills and corrections. It will be really interesting to see how they handle Ryan Garcia. Virgil Hunter gets a lot of **** but he is mostly handed "damaged goods". Mares, Khan, Berto, Angulo had just been KTFO or badly beaten before signing up with Hunter. IMO Hunter did a fine job with all of them, but nothing close to what he did with Ward.
D`Amato and Rooney trained Tyson together, showing him the peek a boo and how to get inside on taller fighters, he taught him the D`Amato shift, Tyson did a lot of things Paterson did after watching tapes of Paterson, Frazier, Marciano and other pressure fighters to perfect Tyson`s aproach.
Barry's off his rocker as usual. A fighter doesn't make a trainer great nor do I know I know any trainer who would say that bc a trainer is the one who makes the fighters adjustments.I The end result is a great trainer can take a flawed fighter and make his chances of winning much better....if a fighter can make a trainer great maybe the trainer should be fighting instead ? Take his own fighter , Parker. Is Parker making Barry great ? I would say Barry who pleads with Parker to do certain things would tell you who is more important in that duo. The fighter can make a trainer look great by association but in the end its up to the fighter to win , the fighter shouldn't be improving the trainer. Lol
Although not mentioned much, Teddy Atlas played a huge part in the amateur days with Mike before the fallout.
Angelo Dundee said Ali would have been great no matter who trained him. Dundee just done some 'fine' touches.
