Amir Khan; i really like this young boxer. He has heaps of talent which is still untapped and is still a work in progress. He's been improving with each fight not only post the Prescott fight but even his earlier bouts. We all know he has good handspeed, footwork and lands good jabs/combo's but what I'm asking is could he land those combo's even when he's moving backwards. Like with the Marcos fight he got 'trapped' on the ropes and had to use his lateral movement to manouver around the ring. Neverthless, Amir performed convincinly that night to deserve to get the UD over Marcos; even with those big punches Marcos failed to close the deal; credit to Amir... he showed heart, skill and an improved chin in that fight. Btw i'm not hating i just wanted to ask can Amir fight going backwards and if not how should he go about doing so. This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
What I would love to see him develop is a defensive jab as good as his offensive jab. A jab that can keep an opponent at bay, a jab that makes an opponent think twice about stepping/charging in.
I don't think so; when going backwards against Maidana he wasn't really doing anything more than looking to restart. He can turn his opponents and pivot out well, but fighting backwards? Nah, not really, not yet anyways. Hopefully we see something like that. If he fights Prescott again, that might be his strategy; make him reach, make him pay.
I don't know if he really can fight going backwards, but he shouldn't try to. He's a pretty heady fighter, and I've noticed that he circles quite well in lieu of going straight back, as he should, and that he can do very well (fight in circles).
He’s no Franks Gavin or Floyd Mayweather but I think he’ll surprise people on his fighting backwards skills. I mean that in the sense that Gavin is no Khan in terms of hand speed. Gavin is really fast isn’t he? So yes.
There had to be one and it had to be Farmboxer! No, Amir has shown absolutely no evidence that he can fight on the backfoot at all. In stark contrast to his sure footed and quick forward approach Amir goes off balance and almost falls over his feet when in 'retreat'.
Really good point! You never see Amir having to fight on the back foot as thats not his style. I dont think he can at the momment but if will need to learn fast as he enters the Elite arena. The problem with Amir is he is just an offensive fighter! Uses the jab to fire the right then finishes of with the jab again so he is ready to fire again if he needs to! When he is under pressure he just covers up and runs! There has been a few points in his career were he has been against the ropes and he has had to fight out and at those points he did not look bad! But he is no David Haye! he is one of the few that still carried massive power and angels on the back foot! But khan has no real need to worry about it at the momment. Floyd wont be putting him on the back foot any way its just not what he does.
no, most know it, he doesn't throw anything going backwards, he just tries to circle his opponents and start his offence again
Watch the Kotelnik Fight. He fights the whole fight going backwards and wins nearly every roand. I don't think he's a very good inside fighter though.
He can fight quite well going backwards, he's no Mayweather in this regard, but good enough. His biggest weakness is still his lack of an inside game.
Primarily, hes an offensive fighter, which is probably why were not accustomed to seeing him fight going backwards. But if he wanted to or learns to, Im sure he could. Against ***an (I know, I know :roll he showed signs of it here and there. In fact, I think his first knockdown in that fight was while he was going backwards :think. But yeah, weve not seen strong evidence of it, but if Roach tried to work on it, Im sure Khans got the capacity to incorporate it into his game. Itll be very useful.
He looked sloppy going backwards in the Maidana fight. I think he would need another trainer if he wants to be good backwards.
