Floyd has been boring on many occasions....at least in the ring. If not for being wildly entertaining outside of the ring, his career would have stalled at the HBO level. Remember, he was the B-side to the much more popular Arturo Gatti when he made his PPV debut.
He will need to be heavily built up. Sitting on his punches and going for the KO against Dawson was a start. A lot of casuals don't get too much into the weight issues. He'll also need a rival or two to be built up. Somebody who is dangerous but not as nice guy. Froch would have been perfect, but Ward already blew him out. Even then, he'll never be a huge PPV star.
Not calling him boring but... (Wouldn't call his style exciting to the casual fan.) Did Pernell ever headline his own PPV w/o an already established PPV fighter as his opponent?
Good question. I can only remember his ODLH and Chavez fights as big ticket events. He was a remarkable boxer, but people want knockouts if they're shelling out dollars.
