While weighing in at 147? Sugar Ray Robinson routinely fought middleweights while weighing in at 147

A fair few he wasn’t overly skilled but he was a BIG middle so I’m not sure, it’s sort of asking a 147lber to fight a 175lber.

Charley Burley beat a heavyweight and Robinson was a hair breadth away from defeating Maxim

Nah, they’d be coming in around 147lbs while McClellan would be coming in at like 182lbs or something.

Maxim wasn`t a killer like G-man and it as said that Ray for middles while only weighing 147, well nobody weighing 147 would stand a chance v G-man.

I think quite a few could but I also think McClellan is overrated. He wasnt very skilled and his resume isnt very deep. Size and power only take you so far in this sport at the highest level. Some of those 1940s welterweights were very proven against all sorts of styles and sizes. McClellan wasnt very proven at all.

    Thank you.
You don't have a clue how many times I've written something similar to what you wrote on this site.
McCellean is one of the most overrated fighters of the past 30yrs.
Look at his opponents. The best two names were a completely finished John Mugabi, and a close to finished J.Jackson.
He loss to a few scrubs In the prime of his career.
He was expected to destroy N.Benn ( who had been stopped by a couple fighters not known for dynamic power)
And how did that fight turn out for him?
McCellean gets a lot of sympathy ( Deserved, I for one never want to see a fighter seriously hurt in a boxing ring) but when studying his career from a purely fan standpoint. It's smoke and mirrors, he never stopped anyone who hadn't been stopped before, he feasted on a bunch of has beens and never where's.
Guys just looking for a payday for the most part.
Yes, there are many welterweights from that era that could make him look foolish and school him.
And a few other era's, especially the welterweights of the 80's that had size and skill.

    Hi Buddy.
For what it's worth, I also think he is overrated for all the reasons you have outlined, as for a 40s Welterweight look no further than Zivic, McClellan would have held no fears for the redoubtable battler, when you have shared 4 fights with LaMotta, beaten, Burley and Booker, you are more than ready for the likes of McClellan, the dark arts would be out in force, and Gerald would be bemused, befuddled, and thoroughly beaten, Zivic by wide UD or if the ref was a compassionate type, a late stoppage.
Stay safe Rocky, chat soon buddy.
    Mike.
