can any fighter in modern history become one of the greatest, if not the greatest?

Yes you do. The only thing Mosley has on those two is size. Both proved that they can hang in with bigger guys, both fought and beat better guys than Mosley, like Ambers or Berg. But it´s not about them fighting Mosley, it´s about them beeing more skilled than Mosley.

What gave me the impression? Well, you writing boxing was in it´s "infancy" in the 50s perhaps? Boxing was at it´s high from the 30s to the 50s, still very good from the 60s to the early/mid 80s, then it just got worse.

Pacman, both Klitschkos, PBF, and maybe I'm crazy but Bute.

All have stellar records against the best of their competition, and all win dominantly over their perspective challengers.

Pacman has accomplished the most, and he might be the goat before it's through, but unless the fight is made with PBF, we may never know who was the better man, and time is on PBF's side.

12-15 more dominant defenses by Wlad Klitchko will put him over the top in the HW AT rankings. Vitali could do it with just 5 because he doesnt have the embarrassing losses of his younger brother.

What i mean by infancy is that the elite room isn't fully packed yet - i shouldn't have used infancy as a term, but then again what other word is out there for that. I am fully fully aware how enourmous the telents are in the eras you mentioned, the current talent are in different sport. But there are (very) few physcially gifted talents here and there popping in boxing that can compete (the likes who dominates amateur/olympics onwards like floyd , mosley, etc).
