I think you'd more be looking at Basilio/Walker as the rock-jawed high workrate welterweights that could perhaps smother Ray and outwork him. Both have fairly shoddy defense though, so it's hard to see them doing so without paying a massive toll for it. Guys like Duran and Armstrong are too small for the job and Honeyghan would just get blasted the **** out of there.

Agree that Leonard fighting the right strategic fight has a good chance. He has the athleticism to fight a perimeter fight and pick his spots, and slightly better defensive ability, so if he does a minimalist job he could find the solution. Likely to be a nip and tuck either way affair at best though...

Hearns would be taken out, no real question imo. Robinson is physically stronger than Leonard, takes a better punch, and punches harder too.... that's a wrap for me...

If I had say $100 to bet stright up, no odds. I would put my money on Leonard and Hearns.

Yes, at ww I think at least one of these 3 would beat Robinson at least once:
    Holman Williams, Burley, SR Leonard....

If I had to go with someone it would either be Thomas Hearns or Floyd Mayweather, but mostly Floyd since Hearns chin is unreliable. In the Leonard fight, his chin didn't seem that good but in the Hagler fight he suddenly has a chin of iron.

Well, when you consider how handily he beat him in the rematch, and Robinson's notoriety for being a businessman in and out of the ring, it doesn't sound too far-fetched to me.

Not to mention the fact that only a portion of the fans disapproved the verdict in the first fight. The judges and sportswriters all had Robinson a clear winner.

    I don't know... Maybe...

Although consider that even in the rematch, which Robinson supposedly dominated, two judges still returned 9-6 cards.

And knowing how Gavilan was treated on the scorecards on some of his other losses, you get to wondering...

I just find it hard to believe that Ray was good enough to carry Gavilan.

Everything I've seen of both fighters tells me that's got to be a joke....

Mayweather is an interesting pick. If he was as big as Hearns and Leonard, I'd pick him as well. I'd pick him for the same reason I'm going with Leonard. It's not that either has a skill or talent that they are better than Robinson at. What they both have in common with each other is that they both are able to find a way to win. I think lightweight great Benny Leonard had this abaility too, but like Mayweather he'd be to small. I think in terms of a fanasty fight with each doing his best. Robinson's a no brainer over Mayweather. However if this is an acatual fight, given what might be the odds. Betting on Mayweather might be worth the risk.

Tommy is a possibility. If Roy Jones could make 147 when he first started his pro. career then Roy. But Roy was not a welt. But he had the speed to matchup.

Would you expect more welterweights to beat Robinson in a 12 rounder?

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the only man capable of beating Robinson. To whoever suggested Tommy Hearns, his glass jaw is a liability.
