Can anyone tell me about Corrie Sanders

Corrie Sanders is a mythical monster based loosely on the life of a South African prizefighter. The tale is that Corrie Sanders was the fastest hardest hitting most skilled heavyweight ever. Anything he hits he destroys! But for some reason, Sanders never used his amazing ability to climb to the highest levels of boxing. He could have, but he just never really felt like it. He was more content to lounge around and play take in a game of golf. That is until one day when a young little scamper named Sir Wlad Klitschko woke up the sleeping dragon. At that moment, Sanders sprouted wings and breathed fire! (Just like Brother Nazim always talks about) And Wlad forgot his lance at home! Oh no! The dragon won and tales of his ferociousness spread across the globe. Dejected, Sir Klitschko went home to his older brother, who swore vengeance and slew the dragon Sanders.


Now for the truth... Corrie Sanders was a 'not very good' fighter with decent power who landed a nice punch and won a match against a fighter who in all honesty was/is way better than himself. It was an upset...it happens in boxing sometimes.

Was called "The sniper" By Lennox Lewis. Beat Botha 4 times in the amateurs koing 3 times?! Had a really good amateur record. and yes he had some of the fastest hands out there with good power.

 

Another wasted potential heavy who could have done something.

Sanders is an underachiever and for most of his career was not very dedicated to the sport. Good guy outside the ring.
When Sanders was called to fight Wlad he was already disillusioned with Boxing and had one foot into retirement and a nice Golf career, he took the fight figuring he'd get one last last-payday to end his career with... got a little more then he bargained for. He never planned to stay in the sport passed the "Klitschko contract" (fight Wlad, rematch w/Vitali, rematch w/Wlad) and when he lost to Vitali he made good on his decision to hang 'em up.

 

He is the only guy that seemed to shake Vitali in the ring! Tough mother****er! I think he used to be a cop, anyone confirm this?

Anyway, I'm with JLH on this one. While Sanders was indeed an underachiever, he wasn't that great. Decent enough, but not particularly skilled and gassed quickly. There were a lot of aspects that made him tricky, but even if he was motivated he wouldn't have been someone who would have been some kind of dominant champion.

 

Good boxer puncher....quick hands and awkward..

By nature could be a bully...

No money in a rematch, compaired to the pitfalls involved..

 

Don't know everyone says he gassed early?! Need 2 c some of his earlier fights b4 u say that. Of course when he got older it changed.

He did go all 12 rounds with ross purrity which the younger Klitschko didn't do. Not a putdown of Wlad either just a fact.

Talk me through the Wladimir Klitschko fight.

Corrie Sanders: I was very confident. He didn't jab like I expected he would. I had worked hard on a plan to get close to him, to get past the jab but suddenly I had the chance to land a big punch and he went down. I give him a lot of credit - he got up and showed courage - but he was gone and I could see it in his eyes. There aren't many guys who can recover from those sort of shots, maybe three or four in the whole division (Corrie confirming that Wlad doesn't have one of the best chins in the division even though he's one of the largest heavyweights). The second knockdown (in the first round) I think could have been a knockout if not for the bell saving him. Sitting in my corner waiting for the second round, I knew I'd beaten him. He was out of the fight and it was a matter of landing a few more shots, that's all.

He was shocked, basically. He couldn't believe it. I hit him again and it was all over and let me tell you it means so much to me. The belt was important but most important was that I'd knocked out the guy who almost everyone said was the second best heavyweight in the world. He was supposed to be the guy to rule for years and years after Lennox Lewis retired and I'd beaten him in two rounds.

There were so many people who didn't believe in me, but now everyone is happy for me and supporting me. When I got back in South Africa there were all these fans waiting at the airport for me with my family. I was unbelievable that all those people took the time to wait around just to see me. I had tears in my eyes.

What's the story with Vitali Klitschko's ring rage immediately following your win?

Corrie Sanders: (sighs) Well, you know, it was my moment. I'd just won the title, beaten his brother fair and square and he comes to my corner and starts shouting it was his family's belt and that they'd take it back off me. He said he'd knock me out. I wish he hadn't done that and we had this argument in the ring. He also had an argument with Lennox after their fight - it looks as though he can't take it when things don't go his way.


I understand the champ gave you a pep talk on the eve of the Wladimir fight.

Corrie Sanders: It was great! We met for the first time when he was in South Africa for the (first) Rahman fight and was very nice to me. He telephoned me in Germany and I was so happy that the world champion took the time and effort to call the night before the biggest fight of my life. He gave me some excellent advice. Lennox told me that Wladimir doesn't like getting hit and to push him back every chance I got because he can't fight (going backwards).

How do you see a rematch with Wladimir Klitschko?

Corrie Sanders: I have a step up on him, mentally. I know he'll fight very differently the second time around. He'll be probably be a completely different fighter with a completely different approach in this fight. But the truth is he can't take my punches and, even if it takes until round seven or eight, I'll land and get to him again. I think next year is my last in boxing.

37 years old on five weeks notice .. training on boxes of donuts and cases of beer between rounds of golf ... destroyed Wlad ... at 38 years of age - while as (un)fit as the pillsbury dough man - lands a series of straight lefts and chases a panicked flailing retreating Vitali for the last 25 seconds of the 1st round cracking him again to the right temple and as he sweeps to free himself from Vitali's attempt to hold watches him drop to the canvas .. a few more seconds and maybe 12 fewer glazed donuts and he would have had a KO of both brothers in vaporizing fashion - and as an old pudgy man.

He was decent but nowhere close to great .. same as the Klits basically - but he is the superior natural puncher by far.
