He definitely wore the cuffs, diluting his knockout percentage. But he was also the first man to put Gavilan on the deck, and is sitting in the front row along with Gavilan in that inaugural IBHOF class of 1990 group photograph, right where he belongs. That may be why he's overlooked somewhat now. His preeminence has now been taken for granted for over 20 years in Canastota, and he passed on four years after induction, barely 71 years of age. (Not particularly old by modern standards, especially when considering ideas like Mamby competing at 60.) Ike's now long gone, while Basilio continues to smack people around.
:good I wouldn't say it's that much about Williams wearing the "cuffs" as it is about him facing some tough cookies. Sammy Angott, Slugger White, Willie Joyce, Lulu Constantino, Gene Burton, Johnny Bratton, Freddie Dawson, Ralph Zanelli, Kid Gavilan, Enrique Bolanos, Beau Jack, not among the easiest men to knockout and he did stop some of them.
Bravo! I cracked up at this one. Between your profile pic and answer I actually laughed out loud. Way to help me start my morning!:happy
Ike lived here in LA during the final years of his life and I got to know him well. I never tired of hearing his stories. I just wish I knew as much about boxing then. I have a ton more questions I'd love to ask him. Miss you, pal...
