I think that Barry's record indicates that he deserves to be included in the discussion of all-time greats as much as others who fought during his career like John L., Fitzsimmons, Corbett, Jack Dempsey (the Non-Pareil), etc. Even more so than Sullivan, whose pedigree as a gloved-heavyweight champion is very, very weak, almost nil, but he is still included in post-bare-knuckle era discussions. Virtually all of his gloved appearances were in the nature of exhibitions except when he lost to Corbett who was the first gloved champion. Barry has to fit into these all-time great discussions somewhere. Barry's closest lineal niche is among the flyweights. There have been long periods of gaps in such divisions as the junior lightweight and junior welterweight divisions, so the notion that lineal continuity can be re-asserted after a time lapse has been generally accepted in other instances. The names of divisions have evolved over time as well. Light heavyweights were once called cruiserweights in Britain, and what were once junior divisions in one class are now called super divisions of a lesser weight classifications by some present-day "sanctioning bodies." So the name of a division shouldn't trump the reality of the situation when following a linear trail.
So basically, I think, we agree.

Flawed hypothesis: division is dictated by the higher weighing fighter.
