Can boxer be recognized as a multi-weight champion if he moves down a weight class?

    The title says it all. Can a boxer be recognized as a multi-division champion if he moves down to a weight class below his own and beats other fighters to become champion? For example, if Bivol moves down to 168 and beats Canelo.

    Yes though it rarely happens. Bob Fitzsimmons won the heavy title and later after losing it won the Light Heavy title.

    You make weight you make weight and if you win , why wouldn’t it count?

    In fairly recent times, Roy and Judah both did it. Although in both cases, they had already previously held titles in the weight classes they moved back down to.

    Clarissa Shields is a weird case, started off at Super Middleweight and won belts backwards to middleweight and junior middleweight.

    Yes, definitionally so. How could you possibly even question this?

    It's nowhere written that you're "supposed to" have an upward trajectory in weight throughout your career; there's no reward for doing so and no penalty for going the other way. Multiple division title status is multiple division title status.

    Akira Yaegashi moved from 105 to 112 and later moved back down to 108.
    If anyone tries to take that away from him, I will hurt them.
