This is a bit of a hot topic right now, I think. It's interesting because I think Brandon Rios has been building himself up as a legitimate contender in a very old fashioned or 'Classic' way, building a great streak of wins(Acosta, Antillon, Lowther, Peterson, Teron, Perez) in the past couple of months. He's undefeated. No opponent has made it the distance with him since October 2008. Juan Manuel Marquez has had some trouble with his type recently in Juan Diaz and Katsidis(who downed him). It stands to reason that a crowder would be a bad fit for him, smothering his punches and not giving him breathing room to counter. Rios, in my view, is harder+ more accurately hitting, faster, with better punch variety, better lead hand play, and is pretty good at picking off punches than those guys. He's also a big big man, rehydrating to LMW in the ring.

We all know how good Marquez is, and what he does best.

My question is: Is this young contender capable of putting away this old master, or is he too raw. And what would the result of this fight do to Pacquiao's, Marquez's, and Rios's legacy depending on the result? Break it down for me, resume and styles and ability.

Marquez is an old fighter now imo.Anything he does now is icing on the cake and not likely to detract from him if he fails.

unless you use MAG duran logic, in which case he's already completely destroyed his legacy by being shutout by Mayweather.;)

As for Pac, i dunno.I guess he wants as little successful weight jumpers as possible.Just like Jones jr probably didn't want any fat, out of shape former middleweights beating John Ruiz.

People seem to think Marquez is some unconquerable beast though, in light of the Pacquiao fights I suppose. He hasn't looked truly great in a long time. I know you're not big on the mexican unholy trinity(possibly because people rate them above the Cantos of the world), and that's understandable, but he is at least a top 10 fighter based on accomplishment, and i think we can call him the LW champion of the world. What does beating him bring Rios on a 'pound for pound' scale of valuation?

I would think anything is possible, especially when you consider that JMM is in the twilight of his career, and that he both obliges the bangers (sometimes) and can be dropped...

My first reaction is to say JMM has too many tools and too much experience for him, but again, I think his number might get called any fight now.

It also has to be considered that JMM is faster and throws more compact punches in close than most of Rios' opponents.

In Rios' defense, he can punch like that for as long as it takes, it seems, and he's got a great arsenal, he's tough, and he's got the right attitude to go places.

As for legacies, Rios has nothing to lose. Marquez won't be hurt by a loss to an up-and-comer like Rios at the end of his career, especially if Rios makes something of himself.

I don't see it impacting the Pacquiao legacy at all, unless Rios goes on to be some great fighter (unlikely) and Manny beats him. At this stage, I think JMM has done enough to give himself a legacy that's more than just, "dude who gave Pacquiao tough fights." He's beaten several solid opponents, been at the top level for a while now, 3-division champ. His legacy isn't just directly tied to Pacquiao's now, and a win over Rios is a nice little addition to it.

As for the fight itself, I'd still favor Marquez. He's getting old, and a strong banger like Rios is always going to be dangerous for an aging fighter with JMM's style, but I think he still has enough to get the job done. If he loses, particularly if its by knockout, he's almost certain to retire. At least, he should retire. Rios would enter the top 10 P4P, though it's hard to say where until we see how JMM looks.

If JMM loses to Pacquaio it may happen, maybe not though as he may retire if he gets stopped. Rios looks like a future great and new Chavez to me though, his punching is short accurate, every punch mastered, combinations to head and body, well timed and beautifully placed alongside plenty of pressure. His defense on the way in is very tight and his movement very smooth. He's beating some good contenders and looking devastating doing it. JMM-Rios would be a superfight as far as trade fights go

Heh, i don't know about new Chavez per se but i do agree with you that he is technically quite undersold as a' banger'. His pressure is reinforced well behind a jab, picks off shots very well with gloves and elbows, and he does throw very good short punches. He could probably move his head a tad more but i'd say he's the best swarmer type out there besides maybe Mathysse in all honesty.

I was going to start a thread calling Mattysse the new Chavez a few weeks ago  I'd love to see him fight Rios but imo Rios is even better. Its rumoured Victor Ortiz nailed Rios wife and Rios genuinely hates him, what a fight that'd be, we saw what happened when Antillion said something about his wife :D Rios would destroy Khan imo despite the size disparity and this is coming from someone who rates Khan
