'Greatest of All Time" is not a title you can actually win. It can only be bestowed upon you by popular consensus. In the sport of boxing, a pretty high percentage of historians and writers agree that the honor currently belongs to Sugar Ray Robinson. But you would have no trouble finding plenty of dissenting opinions, knowledgeable boxing observers who would argue the distinction rightfully belongs to any of a handful of different fighters. Floyd Mayweather Jr. has never been shy about making his own claim to this mythical crown, and a pretty good chunk of contemporary boxing fans agree with him. They point to his undefeated record and the undeniable artistry of his in-ring performances, and they have a point. Still, the majority of us need to see a little bit more before we're willing to put him on the short list with Robinson, Henry Armstrong, Benny Leonard, Ray Leonard or Harry Greb. That he is the most talented boxer of his generation seems to me impossible to deny, unless you are simply blinded by your hatred of him. But this era in boxing simply can't be compared to the era of Armstrong and Robinson, when everybody fought everybody, over and over, without the sort of dog-and-pony shows we have seen like pac vs. floyd. But ultimately, you can only judge boxers based on the available opponents.
Floyd Mayweather can definitely be a contender for greatest of his time but without fighting Pacquiao he doesn't have the career defining fight he needs to go down in history.
His legacy is too tainted by the fights that never materialized. Pacquiao, Margarito, Williams, Tszyu, young Mosley.
Theoretically anyone can go on to amass a resume worthy of being called the greatest of all time. Realistically, Floyd would have to fight on until a George Foreman age continuing to beat the top level he has fought for years consecutively now. The era just isn't good enough to ever rank up with Robinson, Armstrong, etc.
Mayweather and "young Mosley" didn't even share a division until something like '07. "Young Mosley" admitted to not wanting to fight Floyd anyways. Same with Kostya. They shared time at JWW for one fight and then Ricky Hatton stopped Kostya. Also, Kostya was on a Showtime deal... Williams fight would have never made sense. Floyd either wasn't in his division, was fighting better fighters, was retired, or PW was not long removed from a loss (Quintana I, Sergio II...?). This fight just didn't ever make sense really. Margarito. That is the ultimate never ever made sense fight. Tell me when they were in the same division, both active, both not off a defeat... and then I will give you credit for that. Knowing what happened to Antonio, I don't know why people ever bother bringing him up really. Team Pacquiao walked away from negotiations in Jan. 2010 citing blood testing and cutoff dates and signed to fight Clottey 72 hours later. The rest is just a bunch of BS. And ever since JMM IV, and really, JMM III, this fight didn't make sense. So in the end, the fight that Floyd will forever be remembered as cowering away from, really was only ever make-able between Jan. 2010-late 2011. Wow.
The OP is obviously a Floyd fan. Not a very knowledable fan at that. How do you talk about all time greats and not mention Joe louis? or Ali? Come on man! Floyd isnt the most talented boxer of our generation either that title imho goes to Roy Jones Jr. Dont let these last few years erase what he was. rjj talent was unmatched and at his best he was the best p4p and it wasnt even close as far as #2. Floyd has ZERO chance to ever be considered the goat and heres why: 1. He didnt fight Manny in his prime. to be the best you have to beat the best and he avoided this fight at a time both fighters were at the peak of their ability. 2. He has not had an impact on the culture outside of boxing. 3. His resume isnt strong enough. He has no defining fight. He never fought a great in their prime. sure he fought corrales a good fighter but the biggest names other than alvarez on his resume were all well past prime(dlh, cotto,) smaller(marquez, hatton) and in some cases just flat out shot fighters (moseley, gatti). Now he could attempt at greatness by going after names like paciaou, garcia, golovkin, bradley and martinez. if he could dominate pacman, then put an end to garcias undefeated record then take bradleys title and undefeated record and then moves up to 160 and wins another title in another division against GGG who appears to be the real deal we then can consider floyd in the discussion of all time great. as far as im concerned the mount rushmore of boxing is Robinson,Ali,Louis and Armstrong. End of discussion.
How the **** you gonna be a GOAT, if you motto is LOW RISK HIGHT REWARD. Floyd's skills in undeniable, but he lack balls and has a vagina.
wrong. skills = competition. you have shitty competition, you have shitty skills. that simple. offense, defens, footwork, etc are measure against an opponent during an actual fight not against punching bags, not during training and so forth.
