Well the HW division is pretty weak right now, just like Wlad, to be considered an ATG Wlad had to dominate for a length period of time. If Fury only dominates for like 5 years would he still be ranked among the greats?*
There's no way Fury dominates for the next five years, he's getting beat in his next five or three fights even.
BUT if he does, is he an ATG, it's a hypothetical question. I see Wilder stopping him, and Joshua literally killing him.
If Haye came out of retirement against Fury now, I'd pick Haye. This was styles guys. Although not to take too much credit away from Fury, he's pretty good.
Fury is an amazing boxer, it's possible he beats all of those guys, I just don't see it happening. The guy has legit skills, clearly the most skillful boxer in the HW division.
yeah that's what I've been saying, wlad was dominant when he had the reach advantage, and his opponents were coming forward. fury took away his bread and butter, Haye, Povetkin etc are far better at coming forward.
So if he dominates for the next 5 years, and beats Wilder, Joshua, Povetkin etc goes undefeated you wouldnt rank him as an ATG? What about Wlad?
eat your crow IB, i might have picked wrong, but I stated Wlad's age, and cited his struggle against Jennings several times.
No, and for the same reasons I disregard Wlad. He's a huge guy with skills, and will always outmatch a smaller guy with equal or similar skills. We don't see that in any other division (thankfully), so either create a Super Heavyweight division or stop comparing fighters of the past to genetic freaks.
I just made a thread about this. If you look historically at the careers of boxers who have beaten top 25 ATG's while they hold a belt, about half of them go on to become top 25 ATG's themselves. Most of the rest are in the top 50 all time. Only Douglas and Leon Spinks are clearly outside of the top 50. And their wins alone still put them in the top 100 imo, as bad as they were outside of the one fight. People aren't realizing how good a position Tyson Fury is in, if he can exercise any self discipline at all and be a bit of a consistent champ. Wlad had to labor for years to become an ATG because he didn't beat a clear top 25 ATG. He became a top 10 guy through sheer dominance and longevity. Fury doesn't have to do anywhere near that to become a top 10 guy. He'd be justly considered a top 10 ATG if he a. beats Wlad in rematch b. beats Wilder to unify the belts for the first time ever (for this many belts) c. have maybe 4 or 5 more successful defenses over 3 or 4 years after that. and d. retire undefeated at 32 years old. That is ostensibly doable, and his resume would easily be in the 5-15 ATG range at that point. He could do it a few other ways too. All that said, I think he'll have a Ridck Bowe or Evander Holyfield type career. I think he'll be 15-30 ATG range, maybe unify the belts, beat some real great contenders, but lose to some people he shouldn't and at least one person he should who becomes a more dominant champ (maybe Joshua).
