It would help if these boxing fans knew who Witter was and gave a damn about him.

Let's be honest, to everybody apart from the most hardcore of fans, this fight, like most others, would be all about Hatton. Most people would buy the fight in the hope Hatton wins, and most of the rest will be hoping that Hatton gets KOed - very few people actually care about the fact that it's actually Witter trying to do it.

& thats where we disagree. You trying to tell me that the world dont want to see a grudge match between the current WBC title holder & the comeback kid?
Me? I gave up on this fight ever happening years ago. Thats not to say though that this fight would have massive appeal if it happened, which it wont due to a scared Ricky Hatton ripping his fans off.

The WBC belt - it means very little to casual fans, and very little to hardcore fans (for different reasons).

Besides, it's a grudge match, sure. But people would have no idea of that unless tv companies/promoters do monumental amounts of hyping of Witter, which would be necessary here. This fight wouldn't be a natural sell.

Doubt it will mean much to most people in the UK. Whilst they have heard of Hatton not many have heard of know of Witter.

There isnt the urgency, the desire or the need for this fight like their was say, with Benn-Eubank so I dont see it happening.

We are talking about bringing boxing back to the forefront of sports entertainment in the UK. To do that you need to capture more than just the attention of british boxing fans, you need to capture the attention of the general public. They have all heard of Hatton but hardly any of them know who Witter is.

During the hey days of boxing on ITV most the public knew who Benn, Eubank, Naz etc were. Do they know who Witter is ? NO

By the same token had the general public even heard of mayweather.....no...or they clearly wouldnt have been backing hatton pre fight.

The actual question is woudl Malignaggi, Torres or Rees be more well known or a bigger fight....the simple answer is no....so Hatton-Witter would be massive in comparsion which is all we need to know.....unless Ricky wants to get beat up by Oscar or some other welterweights (who also are unheard of here)

Its abundantly clear that your completely unaware of how BIG boxing events are PROMOTED. The British public had not heard of PBF. Most have probably forgotten who he is now. They havent heard of Enzo or Haye. But i can assure you come fight time that fight will get tons of media promotion for the big all British clash that it is. Promotion is the key here. The names are completely immaterial. If that wasnt the case Hatton wouldnt have made umpteen defences at the a sold out M.E.N for a qaurter a mil a time.

In the Uk only boxing fans know who is De La Hoya is, you saying if he fought in Wembley that he woulnt sell it out! Ofcourse he would!

It only takes a lil bit of hype. Hatton Witter is massive!

If promoted right anything could be massive and it would be the biggest thing in British sport for a week or two although not on the scale of Hatton vs Floyd or probably even Hopkins vs Calzaghe. It would die off again soon after though as it always does, not having top class boxing regularly on terrestrial tv hurts it big time in this country.

I really don't see the logic in Hatton not taking the Witter fight now. Witter is the WBC champion - it's Hatton who will be given the shot. It's clear that Witter would sign this fight tomorrow so Ricky is the only one stopping this from happening.

I don't think it would be as big as Benn-Eubank because those were the days of free TV, primetime Saturday night boxing.. everyone knew them both. The average guy on the street has no idea who Junior Witter is. But still, this would still be a tremendous event/fight if it happened this year.

Hatton - Khan would possibly be the biggest sporting event of the year, but it will never happen, shame about the age gap.

Witter's a nobody, not famous enough for it to be a big deal. Won't even come close to matching the hype for the Mayweather fight.
