Just a random match up that came to mind. Toney actually wanted to fight Povetkin before he lost to Lebedev

Povetkin is too busy and outworks Toney winning a decision.

Povetkin understands range with his deep amateur background, Toney excelled against guys over committing like the first Peter fight and guys with a sloppy style like Ruiz. Don't get me wrong i actually believe this would be a good fight, but I would pick Povetkin on points with his good gas tank, and combination punching and sound defense. 8-4.

What he said ^ Povetkin could keep throwing all night long and he didn't load up his shots which will help him a lot. Toney would spoil and slip a lot but he's not going to evade everything. I feel his own workrate is simply not high enough, and Povetkin has enough punches in his arsenal to keep Toney guessing.

If you wanna know how good Toney is, watch his fight againts Vasili Jirov
His ring IQ and experience would beat Povetkin in a 10 or 12 rounder no doubt

Lucas Browne beat Toney easily. Old one, yeah, but 44 years old is not ancient. And against someone with da ultimat skillz, should that have happened? Dave Allen outslicked Browne after the first round. Of course we know Allen is slicker than he seems, a secret slick maybe. But Toney is the most talented fighter ever, isn't he? Shouldn't have Browne really struggled to beat him?

There's no shame in Toney losing to HW's because he isn't one. But the Browne fight proves that a guy who took up boxing at thirty years old with power and HW stature is a problem for Toney's skillz. To put that in perspective, would Browne easily UD Wlad at 44? I think we know that's unlikely to be an easy fight for Browne. Some more perspective is that Browne was getting easily outboxed and dropped by fat and 40-ish Chagaev until Browne pulled a big counter out the hat and got the stoppage.

The point is Toney is massively overrated and his skillz aren't paying da billz against skilled HWs with power, because they should have paid dem billz much better against Browne who struggled with any HW's with good boxing skills.

So let's get real, Povetkin would destroy Toney.

But 44 years old is ancient in any weight class. How many 44 year old champion are there currently ?

He certainly has a chance, Povetkin is a pretty overrated fighter on this forum.

He did appear to have it all, but really his claim to fame is about the same as Chisoras, lingering around the top 10 for a long time and having a couple nice stoppages…

I would favor Povetkin, but the question of if Toney has a chance, is that he certainly does, and a decent one at that… again, for a fat middleweight… that’s pretty good!

There is an intersection of abilities in time where James Toney beats Mike Tyson.

Another bad bout for Toney was that Rahman bout. Anyone really think he deserved a draw in that one?
