Well I am wanting to get into boxing. I need to buy all of the stuff yet, like a heavy bag, sparring gloves, bag gloves, speed bag, medicine ball, jump rope did I miss anything? Anyways Im 16 years old btw. I dont want to get an instructor either, I want to teach myself by reading up stuff online watching videos and everything like that. I need to know what kind of gloves I need to get, and what LB bag? 80 or 100 lb? then I was looking at everlast stuff, I heard they aren't good though someone told me. I just basiclly need to know the right type of bag gloves, sparring gloves, and what LB bag. Thanks.
If you dont want an instructor, you dont want to be a serious fighter, get good sparring in, or compete... What are you trying to do exactly...be a "badass"?
If you just spend a lot of money on bags gloves but don't get a trainer, your just going to waste your money. guides online aren't going to help you nearly as much as you think. one of the main reasons for getting a trainer is because he sees things wrong with your form that you don't even notice. You would be making a much better investment in finding a trainer and joining a gym in your area.
You need a trainer - without one, bad habits are easily picked up, and once you have a bad habit, it's pretty much there for good.
"Boxercise" at home will get you into great shape, but you will never develop as a fighter working alone in a garage. That will put you on the same page as any bodybuilder who hits the heavy-bag at his gym as many times as he can after finishing a workout. You can buy the entire DVD set of titleboxing for some extra knowledge, but you're still gonna need someone to train you properly. Bodi made the great point on how hard it is to undo **** that you train yourself to do over and over again (bad habits).
Im a begginer also, went to the boxing gym about 1 and 1/2 ago. Think i wasnt very fit at the time and due to that and various reason basically i quit which im ashamed to say. However im back in there now fitter than iv ever been ( which does make it more enjoyable) and have fallen in love with the boxing gym i wish i could go everyday!!!! Basically my advice is if you want to box go to a boxing gym ( a real boxing gym) there is NO SUBSTITUE for proper training NONE!!!
What I am trying to do is just learn boxing, and getting in shape that comes along with it. I dont want to compete professionally. I just like boxing, I don't want to compete. Thats why I would rather just learn it on my own. For the work out that I can do whenever I want, and for the basic knowledge. Then later on if I actually do want to compete i will get an instructer.
Learn the basics somewhere that caters for what you want - check a few places out. If you only want to hit pads and not spar you'll still find someone that does that. Once you've found the gym that suits you go once or twice a week and practice what they teach you at home. But as all the other posts above said, get some training first. Imagine teaching yourself from scratch to play golf! - don't go there - get some lessons first!
Well that was our point, you can not learn boxing on your own. What you can do is punch a bag to get in shape, but it won't be boxing. By that time you will have taught yourself some very bad habits.
It's not a good idea sparring unsupervised especially when you don't know what you're doing. No headgaurds? No mouthgaurds? What are you going to spar on, the solid floor? Who with? Why spend all that money on all that equipment when they have it all in the gym? Are you afraid of going to a gym? It just sounds ridiculous and doesn't make sense logically or financially. You'll probably hardly use the equipment, like when people have weights at home, most of the time they are hardly used. Go to a gym, you'll learn how to box and you'll want to put more effort in after making the effort to come down but you should be pushed hard by the coach anyway. Plus it will be in a safe and controlled environment. That equipmeant at home might get you fit but won't teach you ****.
Why not join a gym for a few months to learn everything and then go off on your own to do the workouts and stay in shape?
