He is probably a top 10 welterweight right now which says more about the division than it does about him. I'd like to see him retire given the horrifying news that he lost his memory of the past 1.5 months. His well-being is more important than anything he can achieve in the ring, there have been so many tragedies in boxing and fighters have to take care of their health first because in many cases nobody else has their best interests at heart. With that being said, though, yeah he can definitely become a world champion at welterweight if he works on his fundamentals properly. It doesn't even have to be a significant improvement, if he can just keep his balance, avoid lunging in like crazy, and work behind a good high guard, that'd likely be enough to pick up a belt at some point. He's blessed with that David Lemieux-level power, he just has to box intelligently and he can KO a weak champion or some mid-level contender for a vacant belt (example 1: David Lemieux). He has a lot of bad habits in the ring that he's been allowed to get away with against domestic opponents, if they match him up properly and gradually build him up he could definitely become a future champion. He needs the right team for that to happen though and not sure that is the case at the moment.
Totally agree with what you said and I will add that Jaron Ennis is now in Super Welterweight so maybe there will be a vacant belt for him.
He has skills; was landing some big punches on Norton albeit to no noticeable effect. If, at 24 years of age, he is suffering from memory loss then he needs to stop boxing toot sweet.
He’s a solid domestic level Japanese fighter they brought for Norman to beat. I would say the thought of him being a world champ is kinda crazy, but isn’t Rollie a world champ or something at welterweight now?
I would say no because his defense is terrible but there’s been some shitty champs out there. Would anyone be shocked if he koed barrios?
He could definitely KO Barrios or Rolly in the future. Nowadays all you have to do to become a world champ is to not be completely terrible + play the rankings game and/or be a promoter's pet project. Wait your turn and you'll get a winnable title shot when the time is right
Welterweight occasionally has some pretty horrendous champions. Also, I imagine that his team will continue aiming for that WBO ranking as they have done throughout his career, so maybe he could snatch up the belt if Norman were to relinquish it at some point. He could beat someone like David Papot, who is highly ranked by said org. I wonder how he would do against Mario Barrios.
