It could happen, The Murray brothers could become like the Klitschko brothers of British boxing. Vitali being older John and Wladimir being Joe Murray.
People forget how good Ricky Hatton was, its laughable... i fully expect John Murray to be destroyed by anyone top 10...
Can't believe there is a thread like this after Murray made hard work of a what, top-50Georgian slugger!!
Being a fellow Manc I can't help but like Murray, but besides a few loose similarities him and Hatton aren't all that alike. I watched Hatton-Oliviera and Hatton-Phillips again recently and you forget how sharp and dynamic Hatton was earlier in his career. Both of them enjoy a bit of a tear up, but Hatton had more speed, power, tenacity and much better footwork than Murray will ever have. Like I said, I suppose there are some superficial similarities between the two but the difference in ability is pretty stark, to be honest. Dunno what happened to Hatton post-Tszyu because he went from being a genuinely entertaining fighter to that horrible, hugging/mauling style which was pretty much just awful to watch. But regardless of that, as well as his showing in the Pacquiao fight (not so much the Mayweather fight, I thought he did well for the first few rounds) people shouldn't forget that he was the main man at 140 for a good 3/4 years and lingered around the p4p top 10 during that time. As much as I like Murray you'd be a mong to expect him to get close to those achievements.
I agree with you, John Murray has a small but loyal fanbase but the more he wins the more fans he will get. He is a solid fighter but one thats hampered by a weak promotor and weak trainer. He needs to get rid of both of them to get his career moving. Like someone else said its not like John Murray is 20 years old, He is almost 26 and still not fighting for a world title. He is still younger than Paul McCloskey though but older than Ortiz, Khan etc. So he still has time to make the swtich from being Uk/Eu level to world level. I just dont think he has the right promotor or trainer to make the step up. As for Hatton, One could argue that Murray did a better job on Thaxton than Hatton, But Thaxton was a shot fighter and it was a premature stoppage so I dont buy that Murray is better than Hatton being of the Thaxton fight, We have seen Murray struggle to make weight and against Al Hamidi. So there are two sides to every coin.
