There's still time, tito's run from 147 to 160 until he met hopkins was formidable: oscar (although disputed), vargas, carr, campas, joppy etc, the quality of his opposition was consistently high. Also, as one poster mentioned earlier, juanma's weight category doesn't really appeal to the mainstream public. I think there's still time in terms of accomplishments, but popularity wise, I seriously doubt he could surpass tito.
Too early to say and even if he does achieve more the Tito which will be very difficult I doubt he'll ever be as popular. I mean Gomez, Benitez and Ortiz could all be seen as greater then Tito but none is as popular.
He won't come close to being as popular as Tito Trinidad. Tito Trinidad did what he did at weights that most people consider to be prime commodity outside of heavy (Welter and Middle). Juan Ma would have to have a Pac-like resurgence through the weight classes to get that sort of acclaim that Tito gets.
I'm not so sure he can surpass Tito in terms of accomplishment. It's a tall order. Tito had a magnificent career, three weight world champ, ATG welter. A tall order indeed. But JuanMa looks dynamite, he definitely has a chance. It will certainly be great watching over the next few years finding out.
this is rediculous not too long ago we were asking this question about Cotto but now that he lost we are asking about JML? I cant imagine anyone surpassing tito's popularity in PR, but legacy wise yeah possibly but they have a huge mountain to climb.
i think he will surpass cotto not tito he reminds me more of tito hes a happy guy always smiling he looks like hes having fun cotto always looks angry to me and like they say on hbo all the time cotto doesnt really fight for pr like tito did juanma is going to be more like tito that he loves pr and loves the attention cotto is more quiet and to himself i like cotto hes probaly my favorite fighter right now and juanma is someone i love to watch and hes becoming one of my favorites also but tito will stay my all time favorite
Even though im puertorican and i have a Juanma Avatar im still not sold on Juanma. Yes he could have a great future and all that , but honestly i think the kid will fail when true tested. "hopes he proves me wrong and make me eat my words" Some how i think when its all set and done, Cotto will be remember as a better fighter/boxer than Juanma.
No. Cotto would be the only one that has any chance of surpassing him but I doubt it. TRinidad is to puerto Rico as Pacman is to Phillipines
I think people are hyping him up way too much. The only "good" fighter he beat was PDL and he was a brutal KO waiting to happen Its crazy to see people picking him over izzy and rafa. Both of these guys can take a lot of punishment and also give it back. We don't even know if juanma can take a punch yet. Not to mention from those guys. They can both crack! I wanna see him face that concepcion kid from the phillipines. 2 hungry prospects always make a good fight
Just has to keep up his training and death threats. I am jk You know its been awhile since I looked at Trinidad's career, and I forgot about alot of the really good fighters he beat in the earlier portion, before he blew up into a superstar. Add to that the fact that Tito got into the professional ranks at a younger age. Trinidad was in his 20th fight and only 20 years old when he beat Maurice Blocker for the title. (Lopez didnt go Pro until he was 22). Tinidad was in his 23rd fight and only 21 when he beat Hector Camacho (another major PR superstar. Lopez doesnt have this sort of fighter to pass the "national torch" as PRs best boxer to him). His next two fights he beat younger versions of Yori Boy Campas (not the guy we know today) and Oba Carr (very underated fighter) to solidify himself) Fast Forward to 99 when he really took off into superstardom by beating Pernell Whitaker, Oscar De La Hoya (perhaps it was tainted, but his PR fans didnt care) at an age that he was only 1 year older than Lopez is now. Vargas, Reid, & Joppy soon followed (n between all this he fought lots of worthy challangers) Point being that time is not Lopez side. There are the opponents available for him to fight (Marquez, Vazquez, Caballero, Cordoba, John etc etc etc) but he needs to start making it happen.
Just one thing: Don't get confused boxing talent with being loved by people. Tito is loved for more than boxing
