Can making boxing a scholastic sport bring it back to where it was?

:rofl I know what you mean, a young kid joined our team and at his first fight he brought his mom and got his ass beat. He literally turned away and ran a few times and finally got stopped in the third. His nose was gushing blood and I tried to cut the wraps off his hand but his mom took off with him muttering about how she would do anything she could to get the barbaric sport banned. :yep And right before the fight she was smiling and acting like its some jolly event shes at. Its like ****, what do you think this is a tea party?

Your fears are unfounded because none of this (ie - mainstream boxing) will ever happen mostly because the nature of boxing is so contrary to everything you just described.

How can boxing be sanitized to the point where it is no longer desireable to watch? Theyd actually have to change the sport itself, not just force boxers to maintain a certain public image. Frankly this (forcing boxers to maintain an image) wouldnt bother me so much because I'm much more entertained by what goes on in the ring vs. outside of it. And it'd be on free TV. Imagine watching a de la hoya fight on NBC for free in any restaurant on bar. or at home...wherever. It would make my life a lot easier.

But overall, mainstream attention is good for the sport.

There are soccer moms in MI that would paint there cars - their faces and wear t-shirts with their son or daughters picture on it to a golden gloves bout.

The west michigan and michigan state championships are huge ... it reminds me of a h/s football or basketball game. the enviornment is sick.

There would be parents who are supportive of it ... there would be parents that are opposed to it ... but more times than not when the kid gets old enough he's going to make his own decision.

There are plenty of professional football players that were told by their parents (mothers in particular) that the sport was too violent and that they couldn't play - but once they got old enough and more independent they made the decision on their own.

How can a boxing fan be opposed to this?

US Amateur Boxing is having a decent comeback of late. Lots of good juniors and our Olympic Team this year is probably the best since 1988. I don't know if it being a scholastic sport would help; but having more things like PALs and Boys and Girls Clubs in urban and inner city communities that can give young kids a chance to start in it and be affordable so the parents don't have to spend money they don't have and know their kids are somewhere safe; that would be a good start.

Amateur boxing as a whole ... the 1996 olympics was the best ... it was actually showcased on NBC and had its own time slot --

And don't forget that the US hasn't had a linear, legitament HW champion since Riddick Bowe ...

So? Heavyweights suck anyway. I'd rather watch Rau'shee Warren or Demetrius Andrade every day of the week over Sam Peter. Hopefully this year they'll show it more at reasonable times because there's a very good chance for two US Gold Medals, with several others having a shot at medaling depending on the draw.

There are boxing teams in colleges... I know Lock Haven has a boxing team... It would be good for boxing to be in the schools... Or if you know how there are little league baseball and little league football, they could do the same for boxing...

    You are 100% correct.

The gym I box at is actually attached to a all Latino school in a low income latino community. A lot of kids there after their school head up to the boxing gym for about 45 minutes to just get a little after school workout hitting the bag etc.

The kids who build a lot of interest in it end up staying longer or come on their own hours. They spar each other, get trained and head out to the Junior Olympics/Golden Gloves around the state.

If things like this were opened up around the country boxing would grow hardcore.

All it takes is a dedicated trainer that affiliates his gym with the state junior olympics/golden gloves and from there its history. The talent will be discovered all over the country if this were to happen.

BTW evander holyfield in an interview on the radio out here stated that the heart of the problem in boxing is the lack of boxing gyms and low quality amateur boxing system. Thats where champions are born in the amateurs, EVERYTHING spawns out of amateur ranks, every champ every star every legend. If they don't work on the Amateur system and opening up boxing gyms around the country the sport will die.

    1) Improve Amateur boxing.
    2) Put boxing back on regular Television
    3) Everything else is history.

Um, if the trainer is registered and his gym is registered, it's automatically associated with the JOs and USAs, as well as Golden Gloves. Almost every decent gym is.

Low income struggling families will let their kids join boxing and fight their way out of the ghetto's without hesitation. This is why boxing in a way is like the "poor" mans sport. It is amazing how it is 100% completely accessible to any and all comers. The gym I box at is 100 dollars A YEAR..... That is what you call - c h e a p
