I totally agree. I don't get this sympathy for smaller HW fighters as if it's unfsir, complete nonsense. If they have to work harder to overcome a weight deficit than that's life. Either settle for being a LHW/CW or do what it takes to play with the big boys.
How about a 2017 update? Cunningham really isn't a heavy and he's out of the ratings. Just a hunch 2017 will be bigger than 1995. Perhaps the biggest year ever.
Bruno would never have been an ATG imo.He was a good "on top fighter",when did he come back from adversity to win? The only time he got back in a fight after being rocked was against Jumbo Cummings,he was clocked just before the bell rang to end the round had it happened earlier in the round he would have been stopped, I was ringside and he was "gone",Terry Lawless couldn't get him on his stool quick enough. Frank was not a natural fighter, he was a manufactured one, he froze when he was tagged,he just didn't have the instincts of the natural scrapper. Faster twitch muscles would have made no difference , he worked out diligently, but focused on building his body into a Hercules type, more muscles meant he needed more oxygen as a fight progressed. I've sat next to him at a couple of bills he didn't give the impression of massiveness, tailored suit with a small waist,in contrast sitting next to Joe Bugner I was very aware how big he was, not sculptured just big.
Faster twitch muscle fibers would have made no difference ? Do shut up mcvey Don't pretend to yourself you're educating me about Cummings staggering Bruno
I haven't checked every year in history but you completely underestimate the impact that Valuev has on a divisions average.
I don't pretend anything, anyone who thinks Tyson Fury is a great fighter and that he beats Ali is not someone to waste time on trying to educate .Stay ignorant it suits you. BTW I saw most of Bruno's UK fights live from ringside so I do know what I'm talking about and you clearly don't. Had you even left school then ?Assuming that you went to one that is, which is certainly not a given.
We know Rocky fought well at 190, to compete in a modern era consistently he need to be 30 pounds heavier, a 16% increase. So consider the following questions Could Wilde compete today at SFW Could Jofre compete today at LAW Could Pep compete at WW Could Whitaker compete at LMW Could Robinson compete at SMW Could Hagler compete at CW Could Jones Jr compete at CW That's what we're asking of Marciano. The only bits of evidence we really have ATM are his victories over Louis, Shkor and Vingo. It is a big leap which is why I highly doubt he's actually campaign at HW, but I still think there are winnable fights for him.
Marciano could stop lots of 240lbs fighters, whether could he defeat talented boxers who scaled that amount is another matter.
He could beat 240lb fighters, but not under today's circumstances. The bigger gloves, the shorter fights and the holding so prevalent right now would result in Marciano losing to most modern day behemoths.
That's the way I see it too. When you get to the elite level guys, those extra 40 lb are going to be a burden. That said, I've seen performances by ATG's where, if you swapped in Marciano for the guy they were fighting, they would lose.
I also agree that this is the most logical conclusion in the most level of playing fields. However, with the 16% increase Rocky would no longer be 40lb lighter guy, he is then 20lb lighter than guys who (for the most part) are a lot less naturally talented than the guys he gave 20lb away to and beat in his own time. But there is no getting away from the up hill battle it is when size neutralises talent. The wear and tear on a winning fighter constantly out weighed would be sufficient enough for a guy not reaching his full potential.
This is absolutely a good point. Rocky beating a pre 1980s 6'6" 240 guy like Buddy Baer or Chuck Wepner is a no brainier. Because changes to the sport had not yet happened to develop that sized man into world beaters. Give Rocky the benefits of a that era and it levels off a lot more. He would still be up against it somewhat but Until everybody unanimously agrees that Mike Tyson stands no chance against Wlad what so ever then you cannot dismiss a bulked up Rocky. As he was perhaps, but only perhaps. You are correct in highlighting the disadvantages of bigger gloves, shorter fights and prevalence of holding has on smaller guys in fights with bigger guys. Too much is heaped upon the smaller guy than ever before.
