Can Paul Williams bring popularity back to American Boxing?

All the people on this forum who criticized Calzaghe for pitty patting opponents on his way to victories not giving him respect, they are now hypocrites for now praising and following Paul Williams then. You can't have it both ways. Either you give Calzaghe his just credit, or get off those nuts of Paul Williams.

Calzaghe demolished Lacy and Roy Jones's faces, and he is called pitty pat pillow puncher. And yet Williams just reddens Winky's face, and he is called a "beast" and "punisher"? You guys give all of us american fans a bad name and reputation with your hipocracy. Slap your wife's butt hundred times, and it will get red. That's what Williams did to Winky last night. Slapped him red.

I never talked bad about Calzaghe and actually I'm a fan and give him full respect. With that said Paul should have more fans and he has shown KO power. He said in an interview that he wanted to get back to punishing people in the ring instead of koing them in the 1st round this was after his fight with Kolle I think.

I was VERY impressed with Williams, and I admit I underestimated the guy bigtime, probably because of the Quintana fight, where he was punished for his mistakes. But he made the necessary adjustments, and it seems the higher weight division he fights at, the better he looks. Saturday's performance vs. Winky Wright was much more impressive than the fight he put on vs. Margarito.

With Hopkins being close to finally retire, it's pretty clear to me that Paul Williams is the best fighter the US boxing scene has to offer today, and I see years of strong performances in him, although he needs a very good team to be able to get the most significant fights he deserves. Imagine this: cause of his amazing physical abilities to go up and down in weight, guys are on the table from PacMan, Hatton, Cotto, Mosley and Mayweather to Pavlik, Abraham, Kessler, Bute, Taylor and maybe Hopkins and Jones, from 147 to 168. He's a special fighter and not only because of his size and style, but because as avoided as he is, there are 4 divisions to look opponents for.

But unlike the way someone like Gamboa was built up, which is QUALITY promotion, Williams lacks the popularity his status in US boxing deserves (like Pavlikesque following). He's probably the best American boxer out there, but the crowd was still behind Winky, not an exciting fighter, and not really popular, and quite interestingly they didn't cheer Paul so much when the fight was over, or when the results were announced, which was weird. I think the promotion behind him, not to build up his career as a fighter, but to build up his POPULARITY, to put more and more asses in arenas failed bigtime which will make him find top opponents pretty difficult. Nothing is over yet, but when Pavlik came out vs. Pantera, he was already very popular, and Williams is still far from that.

So you have this amazing athlete who could be the top fighter of boxing at some point, and probably already the top US boxer with many options. He's also young, exciting and simply fun to watch. But can he bring popularity back to American boxing?

he will if he can get some people to fight him..... guys like mayweather seem to be wanting to fight all the former flyweights and featherweights right now.....

Shaquille is hated everywhere he leaves. Out here in L.A. (where phonies are king) people can see through his bull.

Lebron and Kobe's shoes aren't cheap and that was my point. I'm sorry if their shoes were $198.99 not 200 dollars.

Yes, but he already beat Margarito and it did little to his popularity. When Cotto lost to him, he became more popular than ever. Now when PW lost to Quintana, nothing happened. When he avanged the loss Jones-Griffin style, nothing happened. He put on the most convincing win ever vs. Winky... and I don't think he'll become as popular as high he is ranked as US fighter. Strange, but I think the management's lack of build up the crowds, local or national, is the most definite reason he wasn't popular when he fought Tony. Why he isn't became more popular since then, is something very weird. Maybe he needs Golden Boy Promotions to change things, I don't know.
