Can Pavlik beat the top guys at 168?

While I'm sure there's plenty of hater-ade in several posts regarding Pavlik, I don't think in this particular instance where posters would favor other top 168lbers over Pavlik does not mean Pavlik is a "3rd tier jobber" (even though I'm sure some posters feel that way). To be honest, there's several reasons why posters would favor several top 168lbers in a matchup against Pavlik which doesn't include feasting on Pavlik's
"leftovers"

1). As a simply massive middleweight, he just lost clearly (8-4 to me, 7-5 to you, but nobody had Pavlik winning) to a career 154lber. And along with the loss he took the tougher beating.
2). There's a blueprint on him, and I'm not saying that in the Mayweather way saying he lost a fight. Although Martinez and Hopkins didn't approach it the exact same way, they had similar principles in their gameplan against Pavlik and certain things gave him a LOT of issues. Not that every top 168lber will be able to carry out that plan exactly.
3). He's not far removed from Betty Ford.
4). As mentioned earlier...there's a lot of big SMWs out there. The massive physical advantages he enjoyed for most of his fights at MW will be trimmed considerably. Obviously, win or lose, his toughest fights have been against "big guys" with the exception of Martinez
5) He's been fairly inactive

The Unknown: How does Pavlik's power and chin carry up.

Now keeping in mind all those factors and you can probably see why some posters who are inpartial might lean towards the top 168lbers and it doesn't neccessarily mean he's a 3rd tier jobber.

At this point it's wait and see. I'll reserve judgement until the match after Lopez who I think he's going to annihilate in spectacular fashion. After that match, I wouldn't be surprised if he took a tougher tune up after the fight.

Pavlik destroys Abe, Direll, Ward, Johnson, and Green. Froch would be a war. Bute is the only one with enough power and speed to bother Kelly.

 

I can't see him beating the elite in this division. A big powerful MW but the guys at SMW are bigger and stronger.
If I was managing Kelly I would ideally follow up the Lopez fight with one against Johnson as he is big, strong, comes to fight and has fought many elite fighters so he can be used as a bench mark.
I can see him having a nightmare with the styles of Ward and Dirrell. Froch, Bute or Kessler I feel will just have to much at this stage of his career but lets see what he looks like in his next few fights and if he wins he will no doubt get a shot at one of the top fighters.

Boo,theres no personal attack,or anti Pavlik sentiment.You are an excellent contributor to the forum,you give detailed,subjective,and honest appraisals on lots of fighters,but for some reason whenever you start talking about Kelly,you become blinded ???
As i've said a thousand times,Kelly isn't the same fighter who beat Miranda and KO'd JT in the first fight.He won't have any size/strength advantage at 168,and love them or hate them the likes of Froch,Johnson and Kessler are BIG super middles,with heavy hands,decent skills,and iron chins. I just don't think Kellys double jab,straight right armoury will cut it against bigger stronger fighters.As always JMHO :good

Absolutely not. Froch would win a massive wide decision over Pavlik he's such washed up goods its unreal and will be exposed this weekend. To even think hes gonna make "noise" at supermiddleweight...

why do people keep saying that guys at smw are bigger and stronger than kelly? He's almost 6'3" and walks around at a solid 190+. He may lose for other reasons but being the smaller, weaker guy will never be a reason he loses at smw.

Pavlik will be as big as the other SMW. People mean he won't have a size advantage at SMW like he had at MW. I personnally wait next weekend fight before trying to anticipate how much his return will be successful.

 

agreed about having to wait and see what we will get. who knows what version of kelly pavlik will step through the ropes.

but there are numerous posts in numerous threads saying he isnt big or strong enough to hang w/ these guys which i find ignorant.

That's OK. The rest, and probably some of the same folks, are claiming Kelly is too big for Martinez and they ALL ***** about catch weight.

 

If you knew about this then you would have give Martinez a chance to beat Pavlik before that fight happen but NOOOO YOU POST THREADS AFTER THREADS ABOUT HOW PAVLIK WILL DESTROY MARTINEZ!!
