Can Pavlik win a 12 round boxing match against Calzaghe or will he have to KO Joe?

fair analysis, however if Joe can time the 1-2 and get past it, what is Kelly's inside game like? Does he have a short effective hook, or does he simply rely on those long limbs and leverage? These are all things I cant wait to find out, because Kessler's inside game surprised me a lot, Calzaghe ended up beating him at his own game, which was stand off and box.
I like JC's chances here, one of his best attributes is taking away his opponents best shot and making him re-think his approach. Lets see how Kelly adapts and if he's even capable, as he'll certainly need to be, he wont win with his bread and butter 1-2 all night as Kessler quickly found out.

I hesitate to type this, because so many love to laugh at Zuniga, but KP vs Zuniga was as inside as a fight can be. Not exactly, so don't go bombing, but sort of like Corrales/Castillo or Bowe/Holyfield I where the two fighters just sort of lean in to each other and blast away. Or maybe even Campbell/Diaz type. But yes he does fight inside, quite well, but from a distance is bread and butter. Another one of his un-noticed moves is a combination of a jab/hook in one. He starts it out looking like a jab and as the opponents guard comes up in front, he snaps it around with his long arms and it's quite punishing in itself.

You always see (Miranda, Taylor, for example) being rocked by the eventual right hands (hitting the left side of their face) but it's almost always the right eye that is swollen shut and nasty looking.

Any beer you like, and I'll be open to suggestion on what real beer should be (I don't really dig REAL dark stuff though..i.e. Guinness, Amber is cool though). Safe exit from the stadium is high priority.:good

Let me start by exploding a few myths:

    1) Kelly's power at 168 is questionable. This is just wrong. The second Taylor fight went the distance at 166 because Pavlik sustained injuries to BOTH hands. And, it was a REMATCH. JT obviously trained specifically to box 12 rounds, and avoid getting knocked the **** out. In addition you have to give credit where credit is due: That was arguably the best Taylor we've ever seen. Never did he square up in front of Pavlik, or lead with his head, or leave his midsection wide open; mistakes Joe makes repeatedly. Pavlik has fought at 168 and higher a few times, and every fight ended inside 2 rounds. It's true that those opponents were scrubs, but they didn't last 2 rounds!

    2) Joe will quickly adjust to Pavlik's slow 1-2 style, and handle Pavlik easily afterward. First off, only those fighters who have never fought Pavlik say he's slow. Everyone else says things like, "He's a lot faster than I thought." The posters who keep making this claim probably know a lot more about Joe than they do about Pavlik. Pavlik's bread and butter is the double jab followed by the straight right, but his arsenal contains MANY other weapons. Pavlik has ENDED fights with a single left hook to the body. He has damn near decapitated a couple guys with uppercuts, and he has sent guys backward into the ropes with a jab to the chest! Say what you will about Bronco McKart, but you have to admit he is double tough, and Pavlik put him on his hands and kness struggling to breathe with a single lead right to the body. In conclusion let's revisit that ominous second round of the first Taylor fight. JT had Pav stumbling around the ring like a 3 legged giraffe trying to skip rope backwards! BUT, Kelly still threw 60 punches with a decent connect rate. That's about average for a good middleweight in a good round! It will take more than a few simple adjustments to outbox Pavlik much less do it easily.

    3) Joe beat Kessler, so he'll outbox Pavlik easily. In the most important fight of his career Kessler choked up. Pavlik won't! In all earnestness let me ask one simple question; when is the last time Joe fought someone who will fight like he would rather die than lose? I asked because that is what he will have to contend with against Pavlik.

Now, back to the question. Can Pavlik win a 12 round decision against Joe? Calzaghe is VERY cagey. He will cut into Pavlik's normally VERY high connect right. Conversely Pavlik's power will cut into Joe's insane work rate. The boxing match is 50/50. In a war Joe is goin' down. I suspect we will see a bit of both types of fight. I'll stick to my prediction. Pavlik KO10 Calzaghe.

Oh about the same time Calz became SRR, holding MASSIVE, ENORMOUS, DISGUSTING stylistic advantages over every active fighter for 4 weight divisions north and south .

Just on Setanta news mentioned about Calzaghe's after revenge for Locketts defeat, looks like this is going to happen!!!!!!

Everyone seems to be writing off Calzaghe big time, a mega fight against an up and coming star with revenge in mind, against the odds is what he needs to get him motivated I reckon wouldn't be suprised if he is more up for this than the Hopkins fight!
In fact I think he was way too casual and overconfident against Hopkins and now he's had a kick up the arse!!!
Im going to love this place when the next big hype job loses!!

Agree with most, but a KO is more than a minimal probability. Anyone who thinks Calz. will fight the way he did against Hopkins is mistaken. Calz. will fight more the way he did against Kessler but I think he will move even more laterally to slow Pav. from moving forward, and it will keep him from setting up his punches so well.

I think Kessler has slightly faster hand and foot speed than Pav., and their power is about the same. Pavs. big advantage over Kessler is his great punch output and relentless pressure. If Calz. attacks the way he did Kessler, he will be getting way more punches coming his direction and that may be fatal. That's why Calz. will need a lot of movement to offset those strengths of Pav.

As the thread starter mentioned, Calz. needs to be as good as he was against Kessler to win. It all comes down to if he still has the ability to move well in the ring for 12 rounds.
