and yet we all know what Floyd did weight-wise for the JMM fight ;)
I take what Floyd says with a dose of salts

I could be wrong, but didn't team canelo put forward the catch-weight as their initial offer, rather than Floyd demanding it?

    I'll have to research it.

Serge and Shadow are the best people to ask.

    From memory:

Canelo told the media that he'd be willing to do 150, but I think that was some time before any official negotiations, and he was just being over eager in trying to secure the fight. After that, Floyd told the media that he didn't care what Canelo rehydrated to, as skills were more important than weight. But I believe that Floyd demanded the C-W as soon as the official negotiations took place, which contradicted his previous quotes, including the ones which Serge has just uploaded.

If his opponents weighing in at 154 was too much for him, then he shouldn't have been holding a belt at that weight class.

Canelo said he would be prepared to drop down to 150 catchweight for Floyd. However, IIRC, that was in 2011 when he was still only 21 years old and obviously still growing, then Floyd ''I would never fight someone at a catchweight, give me them were they're at the best so there can be no excuses'' Mayweather held them to that 2 years later.

LAS VEGAS -- The verbal sparring between the camps for Canelo Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather escalated this week when Alvarez admitted that he had no intention of fighting under a catchweight but it was the only way he could gain entry into the blockbuster fight.

In an interview with reporters Tuesday, Alvarez, 23, was asked about the controversy surrounding the fact that Saturday's pay-per-view super welterweight title fight on Showtime (9 p.m. ET) will be fought at a catchweight of 152 pounds. The Money team has said Alvarez, who is naturally bigger than Mayweather, first broached the subject.

"I'll tell you the truth of what happened," Alvarez said in Spanish through translator Eric Gomez. "Why would I give up the weight? I'm at 154. I'm the 154-pound champion

"I wouldn't do that. But when the (fight) negotiations started, they wanted me to go to 147. I said that's physically impossible. I couldn't do it. Then they inched up to 150. I said I can't do it, that's impossible. Those days are over. I can't make that weight anymore, I've grown.

"Then they went up to 151. And then finally, so we could make the fight, I said, 'If anything, I'll give up two pounds. I'll go up to 152. I agreed to that. Then they tried to force me to be quiet and not to mention anything that they came up with the weight of 152. And that's why ... I haven't said anything until now.

"They said we were idiots, we were stupid, that we were the ones that wanted the catchweight."

Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe said it was simply the "A-side" fighter getting the upside over the "B-side" fighter. Mayweather usually fights at 147 pounds.

"We just took advantage of a situation. It's no different from basketball, football or baseball," he said. "You're always going to put your opposition at a disadvantage, if you can. You break 'em down and you go in for the kill.

"The kid suggested a while ago that he would be willing to come down to fight Floyd at 150. So if he put it out there ... this is business at the end of the day, and we're going to hold his feet to the fire, and his manager the same way."

Ellerbe said Mayweather was in the same situation in 2007 when he fought Oscar De La Hoya.

"(Alvarez) is making the most money he ever made. But at the end of the day, he who is on the A side is the one that controls. That's what being the A side is, about having leverage.

"Floyd has earned the right to do that."

Canelo said Mayweather tried to include a "rehydration clause" in the fight contract, where Canelo would be unable to weigh above a certain number on the day of the fight. Canelo, who rehydrates to more than 170-pounds on the day of the fight, rejected that clause.

"They came up with a second-day weigh-in. They wanted to do a second-day weigh-in and limit what I could weigh the second day, and I wouldn't agree to that. And then they tried to force me to stay quiet and to not mention it, and that's why we didn't say anything. And we haven't said anything until now," Canelo said.

Canelo and his team pushed for that Mayweather fight, not Floyd. Yeah, he was young but he wasn't green. He didn't possess the skillset then and he still doesn't show the skills that he would need to beat Mayweather prime to prime.

So are you saying you'd give a more experienced Canelo a chance of beating that Floyd? Because I think he gets schooled again.

To drive ypur point home, use Salvador Sanchez as an example. He was 23 yrs old with 44 pro fights. No one in their right mind would ever call Sanchez too green, yet people haven't a second thought to call CA green! We know what the deal is and why those people say that!

This. If anything Canelo learned more about the business side of boxing and catch weights from Floyd than he did any in ring skills, since for the most part he's the same fighter. Canelo at 40+ fights would've always beaten guys like Kirkland, Khan, Smith, and Chavez Jr. He was also always going to struggle with guys like Lara, Cotto, and GGG because all three of them are elite fighters like he is.

It's amazing that people are trying to paint Canelo as a wet behind the ears rookie when he fought Floyd. If more than 8 years as a pro with 40+ fights in multiple weight divisions and being a unified WBC/WBA champ makes someone green than almost all pro fighters active today are green.

He was green in the sense of big fight experience.

Mayweather was 36 and gave up about 20 pounds on fight night. Life is full of compromises.

Amen to this right here. There's no boxer around besides Canelo who could be a multiple weight division and still be called green. **** nobody gave lomachenko that excuse when he lost his first title match bc they knew his amateur background. Well Canelo didn't have a amateur background he definitely wasn't inexperienced when it came to professional fights.

For me, the difference is Lomachenko wasn't a 23yo kid. Canelo's lack of ams means he learned on the job against level appropriate opponents. Canelo also wasn't a multi-weight world champ when he fought Floyd.

These things are arcs, not straight lines. A Canelo with more experience doesn't happen in a vacuum; that also means a bigger Canelo vs an older Floyd. Floyd's the better boxer, but it's always a balancing act with a bigger, younger, talented fighter on the way up. Timing matters, as does weight class.

Their career arcs would've intersected about 2015 at the earliest, and 2016 at the latest. At that point, Alvarez at 154 or higher would've won IMO.
