I am not denying PW is a great fighter. I am merely questioning his ability to handle slick southpaws. He may well mature, adapt and beat Martinez, if this is the case, he will have fixed his weakness. Should he beat Martinez he will be recognised as a great fighter but he won't hold any belts and people will still avoid him. At least if he's have beaten Pavlik people would need to fight him to be seen as the best in the division.

I think this will be a competitive fight, but to me he has to answer this question about southpaws.

The 2nd fight with quintana didn't count as it was over too early.

Like Pacman, till he beat cotto no one knew if he could handle fights at the higher weight classes, he destroyed hatton far too easily and as a result people didn't know if he could go to war at the higher weights. by beating cotto he proved he can take punches, and carry on throwing for 12 rounds, at the higher classes.

Like Floyd, after castillo 1 people didnt think he could handle pressure fighters, but since beating dlh and hatton he showed he could effectively box against a pressure opponent.

similarly, if Williams beats Martinez he'll have proved he can deal with southpaws.

Well if being outboxed by Quintana is the concern than I think we can expect a very well prepared Williams since after all he is sparring Quintana for this fight.

Over on fightnews, they said Quintana is helping Williams by sparring with him to emulate Martinez.

Kind of weird since Quintana is chasing a trilogy with Williams, I hope it gets recorded and uploads on youtube. Yeah, I know it was only 1 round but Quintana was outboxing Williams before the shot that knocked him down, with headgear now, Williams will get his hands full even if its just sparring.

after stopping quintana he would go on to fight and shut out wright who is one of the best southpaw operators of modern time. williams has made some improvements. if not why didnt quintana try to get a rematch? better yet why is he now williams' sparring partner?

Williams just "lost" the first fight with Quintana he did not get "dominated" or "schooled" like some say those words apply to fights such as Hopkins-Pavlik or Calzaghe-Lacy. Even those who haven't seen the fight with the scores being 112-116 (two judges) and 113-115 should tell you Williams did not get screwed. Martinez is going to be a very tough fight but I feel Williams has grown alot as a fighter since them and should win a UD it is also worth noting that he is probably getting some good sparring in with the same slick southpaw that beat him that fight in Quintana.

Williams had a bad night against Quintana. The second fight really only proves PW can bang a bit, and we already knew that. A rubber match was in order, but Goosen/Williams never showed any interest.

Martinez was always the back up plan for December 5th. I'm sure most of you remember last summer HBO gave Pavlik a list of fighters they'd approve. Martinez was on the list. He was the back plan to replace either Williams or Pavlik.

Williams/Martinez is not a title fight at 154 because of money. Sergio said their offer wasn't enough for a title fight, and agreed to 160.

Paul Williams deserves his props for taking this fight. If Martinez wins, they'll fight a 2nd time. PW has a rematch clause.

Expect a rematch...Martinez will win this

What most people don't realize is that Martinez is probably more avoided than paul Williams.
