Did you see the fight he had with Butterbean where he was pummeled and stopped in the first round? But that is not anything to be ashamed of cause' the Butterman also kayoed the legendary Louis 'the bodysnatcher' Monaco in one round as well. How about McNeeley vs. Josh Cobb? Or McNeely vs. Brian Yates or Carlton West? Or McNeely vs. the late John Candy. I saw Candy wins inside the distance.
Fighters of the old school often picked up multiple losses to journeyman, at various points throughout their careers, and they still receieve appraisal for being greats. McNeeley should be no exception. He was remarkably good and would have been a serious contender in the eras of Louis, Dempsey, Marciano, and Ali.
You are quite the boxing historian there Woody. Boxing gadfly Bert Randolph Sugar rates McNeely very high although probably not as highly as you. Sugar's alltime great HW rankings: 1. Duane Bobbick 2. Scott LeDoux 3. Dave 'Ziggy' Zyglewicz 4. Joe Louis 5. Rocky Marciano 6. Peter McNeely 7. Kevin McBride 8. Frank Lux - a George Foreman comeback victim. Foreman never gave Lux a rematch after he won title back in 1994. 9. Muhammad Ali 10. Mike Tyson
McNeeley faints for the count at the opening bell. Not only would Jack knock him out ASAP, but the actor who portrayed him in his biopic, Treat Williams, would also take him out instantly. (For that matter, Patrick Dempsey KO 1 Peter McNeeley.) Whoops! I misinterpreted the question. You were talking about Peter McNeeley versus the Nonpareil! Okay, in that case, I'll take the Nonpareil in one (second).
This is it. McNeeley was taking it to Tyson when his corner threw it in for no reason. Tyson-McNeeley stank to high heaven. In my view, if McNeeley could take it to a 1996 Tyson, he could do the same to a 1926 Dempsey.
It sure did stink. From the moment it was signed it was a cynical mismatch. And then half way through the first round McNeeley's corner decided to take the money and run. Peter was never gonna look good against Tyson, or at least the odds were against it, but the man came to fight, he was getting stuck in, trying to at least go out on his shield and earn his money, with a bit of dignity, a typical clubfighter's once-in-a-lifetime Rocky Balboa moment. And his corner messed it all up. I think Don King had fun with Tyson PPVs and the paying public.
Obviously you're only trying to stir the pot here Woddy. I can't even begin to imagine that you're being the least bit serious. Even if Dempsey crawled into the ring after being shot 12 times, beaten up by a gang of hoods and was stricken with bubonic plague, he'd kill McNeeley long before the first round came to an end. As for this claim about McNeeley being any sort of contender in any era, surely this is just for laughs.
Thanks Evil. I just randomly picked his name off Foreman's record. You narrowly beat out Tom Trimm and Bobby Hitz. Oh wait, Foreman has some some other real doozies on his record from his second career. Who can forget Crawford Grimsley? Or Rocky Sekorski? Or Guido Trane. Mark Young! The list goes on and on for Big George!
Of man someone deserving always gets left out! Here are 11-20 ATG heavyweights. 11. George 'Scrap Iron' Johnson 12. Charley Polite - Infuriated Foreman in a 1975 exhibition by leaning over and kissing him on the cheek during ref's instructions. Foreman made him pay by brutally kayoing him. Foreman had fought five men in one day for that exhibition! Polite might have been the first one when Foreman was still fresh. 13. Brian Yates - Defeated the hardest hitting HW ever Earnie Shavers in 1995 or so. This connects Yates with Muhammad Ali who was in the lower top ten! 14. Josh Cobb - Tex's son who eclipsed his father's legendary career. 15. Lennox Lewis - English HW champ who had only middling success compared to legends like McNeely. McNeely fought a better version of Tyson than Lewis did. I'm sure anyone can agree with that assessment. 16. Bobby Crabtree - Another Foreman victim. He was robbed in that fight. 17. George Foreman - The loss to lesser fighters like Holyfield and Morrison hurt Big George or he would be more highly rated. 18. Adilson Rodriguez - Colombian superstar who amassed quite a record. And yet another Foreman foe!!!!! 19. Wladimir Klitschko - Very good skillset but not a great chin like Cobb. Meaning Josh Cobb not his more well known father. 20. And last but not least the mad with the best chin in history - Ibar 'the sailor' Arrington. Made Chuvalo's chin look ordinary. This fella was the real deal in the chin department.
