A 35 year-old handpicked opponent is entering a fight in a division he doesn't belong to face a young, big knockout artist. The plan is to add this well known, but at this age and weight calculated to be beatable opponent to the younger's resume so it'd look good without facing the fresh elite of the division - does this story ring a bell? Of course the paths are different as Sergio Maravilla Martinez was still in his prime entering the Kelly Pavlik fight, but you can clearly see the pattern Top Rank follows - Hopkins, Mosley, Martinez, Marquez, all 35+ old veterans who for different reasons were estimated by Top Rank matchmakers to be relative low risks for a high reward, which is name and ticket sell value. Hopkins, Martinez coming from a loss with BHop looking a way out in the late rounds, Mosley looking **** vs. Mayorga before a miracle KO in an even fight, Marquez moving up in weight after beating each other to shot fighters with Izzy - they were just not expected to be dangerous vs. Bob Arum's new crop of cash cows. There's often a difference however between the businessman's logic and boxing's reality as Margarito and Pavlik had to find out as the aging veterans refused to play their part and upset the calculated order. Martinez fought a 178lbs Pavlik on fight night in a division he didn't even belong, and many believed he'd go out on a stretcher, but used his superior skills, big heart and determination to pull the upset. I believe Rafael Marquez is in an even tougher situation as his ring age after those extremely grueling fights is closer to 40 and he never looked very comfortable at 122, whereas the Juan Manuel Lopez fight is taking place at 126, a weight clearly out of Marquez' league. He was a superb fighter with great power as he dominated the 118lbs division for years, but it didn't take too much time for the relatively bigger Vazquez to find Marquez as he moved up to 122, and that is our main concern as JuanMa of 90% KO ratio could possibly weigh more than 135 pounds on fight night and we are not sure what the Mexican warrior has left. Can Rafa Marquez at this age pull a Maravilla and upset the calculated order against all odds? Will sweet science, even if rusty and aged, once again prevail over sheer size and phycial force? Or is this the end of the road for a future HOF-er who'll have to follow the script that the once great fighters are being sacrificed for the sake of the next generation's popularity?
wouldnt call Sergio Martinez hand picked. he was the best avalible challanger. But yes Marquez can pull of the upset. He has power to konock anyone at Featherwieght out including Lopez who has been hurt before.
LOL love these threads.. so now marquez is washed up and is a hand picked opponent with no chance. Anything is possible in boxing so marquez has a chance but he'll get Koed and not because he's old but because juanma is better. :hat
martinez was hand picked by pavlik, they picked him because he was small and old, it just backfired on them.
Great Post. Honestly I don't know. Marquez is the superior boxer, I've never been sold on Juanma's skills. But the odds do seem stacked against him. After the Vasquez fights, it's amazing he has anything left at all.
I may be biased as I am a big Rafa fan but I woulden't call it a big upset if he won. I like Juanma but (as pointed out on the ropes) he shows no signs of progressing and he telegraphs his punches. I see Rafael as the more versatile fighter, more experienced, and argueably has the more better combinations. Marquez looked good in his last two fights, but really how good were the opponents, especially at this new weight were Juanma is still huge. Then again Lopez shows frailties against lesser opposition like Conception and Mtagwa, leading me to believe he will stop Juanma inside 8 . If Lopez wins I believe it will be inside 3 rounds, as we all know Marquez's warrior instinct kicks in if tagged he will retaliate and that is a quick way to getting KTFO against a puncher of Lopez's calibar.
IM pretty convinced that MArquez will win.. It's not his ring age that worries me, i think he has enough left in the tank but it's his chin/punch resistance that worries me..
Whens the last time he has ever been KOd. Legitimately I dont even think the fight should have been stopped against Vasquez. He still had his wits. also he is very dangerous when hurt. Thats when im expecting him to put JML in his place. JML will attack carelessly like he did with Concepcion and he will get caught with a big shot and put down.
Yes he's always dangerous but you look at the izzy fight, youll notice how his knees buckle and he'd freeze up for a moment whenever he got hit clean. He was never like that and i think his chin is underrated but that just shows how much he's regressed as a fighter. NOw Lopez who punches just as hard as izzy, if not harder, can do just as much and with his southpaw stance, he wont have a hard time finding the target. Lopez probably knows what he's getting into and what's at stake so i doubt he'll get wreckless like he did with concepcion... He should know better.. I agree, i dont think the stoppage in the vaquez fight was faiir. War Marquez!!
This fight could turn out like Campbell-Ortiz, with Marquez taking an unnecessary beating from JuanMa. It's really difficult to tell how well Marquez will do, he's fought the same guy four times in a row and Vazquez, whos more of a brawler than boxer. JuanMa is young, fast and has a good all-around skillset. It doesnt look good for Marquez imo.
of course Rafa can beat Juanma. Or else it wouldn't be so interesting. But it is what it is and Marquez is past his prime and in a new weight division, but he is still a very dangerous opponent and if Juanma wins he should get some credit. Juanma might be the younger and possibly stronger of the 2, but no way is he the more skillful. This can turn out to be another Barrera-Hamed showcase.
