In terms of mainstream appeal I mean, of course, not quality (not saying he is or isn't good).

He seems to have the power to create excitement.

He has the combination of boyishness and manlynes (by virtue of being a power puncher) that, I think, was the main reason the ladies got bamboozled by DLH.

He's Mexican, so he's got a big following built in.

He has a few of the key elements that made DLH DLH.

What do you think his chances are and what kind of success would he need?

The title should of been Will he become the next DLH.

He has the qualities, big following and power, good promotional outfit and enough decent fighters in his weightclass to match himself against.

Its whether he fulfills his potential.

He could be a very popular boxer but I seriously doubt on the level of DLH..... and he lacks world class speed... which will be his eventual downfall against the best.. Im rooting for him to have a wonderful career though.

I think he can probably be like another Danny "Lil Red" Lopez, not stylewise, but another very popular fighter. To be honest I don't think he'll reach Oscar's level, he appealed to Mexican, American, and fans worldwide. Canelo can also reach that level, he's young, he's very close to his Mexican heritage, but Oscar did alot of things to get the mainstream public's attention. As long as Canelo keeps improving and keeps on winning, the cards will fall into place.

I think with any fighter, be it from Mexico, USA, Europe, if they have a strong local support where they came from and then start gaining support statewide, that fighters popularity spreads like wildfire. I think Canelo's complexion is a non important factor and really is more like an oddity. He's still a work in progress, but the way he fights is one of a more seasoned fighter. The fact that he was also very young when he started to gain popularity and knocking guys out also helps. He also has decent boxing skills not often showcased in Mexican boxing that I guess you can say is influenced from American boxing. Salvador Sanchez and Erik Morales are some great examples of Mexican fighters that could box beautifully when they chose to, but are probably more known to stand toe to toe and go to war. Canelo is just a young kid that gives Mexican fans and fans that like a combination of boxing and power hope that he might be the next Julio Cesar Chavez. Since "JC Superstars" retirement, he left some pretty big shoes to fill.
