Can somebody explain this "cold war" mess between the promotions?

I'm a fairly new fan of boxing and I've been lurking here for a few months reading up on opinions and getting bits and pieces of the story. I just wanted to know what is the deal with the whole GBP - Top Rank feud and why boxers from each promotion won't fight from the other promotion?

Sorry if this has been explained already I couldn't find a thread explaining.

It stems from bob arum being butt hurt over his 2 Biggest prize fighters leaving & making more money on their own.

    Oscar De la hoya
    & Floyd Mayweather.

    He hates them both.

What does that have to do with Golden Boy?

Fact is that the last fight GBP and Top Rank promoted together was Ponce vs Gamboa and that was in 2011.

Cold war is basically as thus:

GBP promotions put on a metric ton of **** fights. In addition to producing ****, they made HBO bid against SHO for every decent fight - even though HBO had put in purse and marketing money for building up most of GBP's star attractions. So HBO would build them up, then GBP would play HBO against SHO for more money or just take them to SHO. HBO did not like this.

HBO tolerated it however, because Floyd was aligned with GBP. Floyd calls his own shots for his own fights, and has his own promotion to be on contracts and directly recieve money - but GBP handles most of the actual heavy lifting and co-promotes. Since HBO made plenty of money off FMJ PPV sales, they gritted their teeth and sucked it up.

Then Floyd left HBO to sign a big deal with SHO/CBS. At that point, HBO decided it was really no longer in their interest to do business with GBP.

Since GBP does not make elite level fights with other promoters, as a general rule (they will make big fights in-house) unless its a mandatory title challenge (which are usually avoided via politics) or when HBO forced their hand that means that you wont see any matchups between top level GBP/SHO fighters and good fighters not promoted by Golden Boy. Espinoza at SHO has no interest in forcing GBP hand regarding matchmaking (he has opinions that GBP listens to, but is happy with GBP "in-house approach - he openly says he is building "pepsi" to HBO's "coke" - in his own words ) so thus people under Golden Boy promotions will likely never again in the forseeable future face top fighters from outside the promotion except for Mayweather Promotions. (That is if and when Mayweather's TMT promotions actually signs a talent other than Floyd himself)

Its called a "Cold War" and some people mistakenly think it can and will "thaw". It wont. Golden Boy, and SHO in conjunction with Al Haymon (who has somehow managed to force most GBP fighters to trade a split of their purse in "management fees" to Haymon in order to get fights) are trying to build a separate boxing "league" entirely.

Thanks for explaining Xelloss, Espinoza sounds like a tool..that analogy doesn't even make sense. I do hope that this will go away eventually, I don't see how "leagues" will work in boxing without the top fighters fighting each other.

I was hoping to see Mayweather fight Bradley if he beats Pac but either fight seems unlikely at this point.

Horribly, unbelievably bias. I don't even want to respond to that.

Very good breakdown of the overall situation but you forgot the catalyst which ultimately caused the split and was a perfect microcosm for the whole situation and Golden Boy's unreasonable B.S.

HBO made Martinez vs Chavez (Top Rank) which was a huge fight especially for Mexican fans signed and sealed for Sept 15th. Several weeks later, perhaps a month, Golden Boy announced Canelo vs Josesito Lopez was going to be on Sept 15th which was a mismatch of a fight salvaged after Lopez upset Victor Ortiz. Golden Boy demanded that HBO air the Canelo fight instead even though Martinez/Chavez had been set and announced several weeks prior and started trying to use strong arm tactics and threatening to go to Showtime if they didn't get their way. HBO's Ken Hershman basically had enough and finally told them to F off.

Lol. Not bias - Espinoza is completely honest and open about his intentions, the "coke vs pepsi" was in his own words and im not twisting them or misrepresenting it in the slightest.

When was the last time GBP did a high profile fight with another promoter? It doesnt happen, and wont happen without extenuating circumstances. Thats not bias, that is objective reality.

They have put on good fights. But they are in-house fights.

When was the last time a non GBP or TMT fighter had a network date? It. Doesnt. Happen.

You could say the same thing about Top Rank/HBO though. What makes it bias is that you only included GBP, as if fighters didn't have to LEAVE Arum to get big fights.

Biased as fook. There's an awful lot more to it than that, HBO and Top Rank are in some cases more to blame.

Shawn Porter isn't a GBP fighter. Neither is Trout or Berto. Kell Brook also isn't with GBP and Showtime was going to have him on vs. Alexander before he got hurt. The fact of the matter is, several promoters have chosen sides. Both networks want guys to fight on their network only.

Goldenboy offered to pay 2 million dollars for Abner Mares vs Donaire, but guess who turned it down?

Xelloss, your post does have a lot of bias in it.
