Can someone expand on why Joe Louis shouldn't have been made to pay taxes...

I never started the analogies I just tried to respond .
Both Buddy Baer and Abe Simon his two opponents in those War Bond fights donated a percentage of their purses too .

although to be fair, at the time he wrote his final one in the 70s, he would not have had time to fully appreciate how much of a waste the Vietnam war was, nor be in the right mind to form a fresh opinion of it that most people eventually came round to after the war.

Louis owed back taxes before the War his accountant told him they would defer paying and do a deal with the IRS but no deal was forthcoming, meanwhile his tax burden, just like Topsy "grew and grew".

He donated his purse to the war effort and did his duty in the service and spoke out to Americans from his position as champion "We are on Gods Side". The government treated him horribly.

Funny but it took Frank Sinatra and Rocky Marciano to use their influence to get their hero Joe Louis a great job in Las Vegas with prestige

Everyone has to pay, EVERYONE, but they should've looked at the situation Louis was getting taxed for and waivered it if there's a clear paper trail what he had done. No way should rich successful people not pay taxes, its laughable, no matter how much you like them
