Can someone explain this fascination with “daring to be great”?

I think In context of the recent slogan of ‘daring to be great’, it seemingly does appear to be weight related - in that you supposedly have to dare to be great by taking on challenges that other fighters at present wouldn’t (other great fighters in the current era). I think Manny started it, and after he essentially retired Oscar it was then a benchmark. Canelo was expected to do it mainly because the GGG fight was realistically there as a dual purpose fight - GGG needed a test and Canelo could’ve possibly present that, and did. Since Canelo won that battle, and because he’s the face oh boxing, many fans symbolize greatness with moving up divisions and beating monsters. Now Canelo inevitably got beat (as weight stop trains), now fans project their dismay by saying he really wasn’t much chop anyway. Same thing would’ve happened in the ‘undefeated era’ should Mayweather have ever lost.

Exactly. Usyk and the likes of Loma just do it they don't make a look at me song and dance about it.

They don't just dare to be great

They do so with zero home advantage

A grand total of one home ref or judge between them for all their world title fights

Zero advantage at the negotiating table

    Zero deck-stacking

    Zero cheating

Look at how many times they've outclassed, dominated, or even toyed with world champions and top contenders their own size, or in Loma's case and Usyk's since he moved up to HW and in complete contrast to many of their peers, much/way bigger ones who are much more powerful with them given all the aforementioned

They've both fought lots of big punchers and KO artists, and ones who are way bigger than them

Look at how commonplace robberies are

How often fighters get robbed in their opponent's countries and backyards

How often we see ridiculous biased scorecards from corrupt judges

That's just one one of the reasons why winning on the road or in your opponent's backyard is that much more difficult and impressive

That's truly daring to be great

Apologies for turning this into an Usyk and Loma lovefest but that's what I do

What I was born to do

And they're never going to stop me from speaking truth to power

Oh no problem mate and they are exactly what I''m talking about. When it's Canelo or Mayweather it doesn't mean anything due to the card stacking and A-side nonsense. That's why I respect the men who "just do it" far more than the cash cows who have to weigh everything in their favor. The Klit's used to pull all that crap as well as Ginger and Mayweather.

    Well said.

Be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.”

Usyk, Lorma, Ali and the likes are born with it mate.

I’ve seen the phrase daring to be great for as long as I’ve followed boxing.

Phrase used to write off loses and illogically glorify favorite fighters.

Absolutely mate, and for out and out greatness, both Ali and Foreman in Zaire springs to mind instantly. Ali was a huge underdog in that fight against an unbeaten out and out ring monster. Not many gave Ali a realistic chance at the time. That fight has gotta be one of the hall of fame benchmarks for greatness and achievement.

I wish I could watch it again for the very first time with no hindsight on the winner.

No doubt. What Ali did against Foreman was straight Brit Level

And he had a iron mandible too which is something we should always lavish praise upon fighters for
