I also thought you had to come in at least above 147lbs at the weigh in to fight for the jr middle title of 154lbs.

Actually, no. Again, there are no weight minimums in professional boxing. This has always been the case since the 1900s and still continues today as tradition.

It's not true that a minimumweight fighter can theoretically fight a heavyweight. Of course it's not.

A minimumweight fighter CAN fight a heavyweight champion. Would state commissions allow it? I doubt it because it's too much of a size mismatch. That's why theoretically was placed in that statement.

    Technically:

Margo is the International WBC JMW champ, this enables him to be a contender for the WBC championship, as the belt is vacant, that is what's happening. Saw this post from boxed ears the other day which makes sense.

As for Pac weighing in lighter, there are no rules for minimum weight. Logic dictates that if you want to go for 160lb title, 99% of fighters would try to get as close to 160lb as possible without going over, to have that extra strength. Pac is too small and has opted for speed, therefore he has weighed in at 144 instead. This has been done all throughout history, SRR and Armstrong both fought for titles where they didnt even need to get up to the limit. Like I said in another thread, its the fights prerogative to come in lighter and not take advantage of the maximum weight limit.

If you said to me pick a a door, 1-3 and I have 2 guesses. It would be to my advantage to use the 2 guesses, however using 3 guesses would be cheating. However, its my prerogative to only use 1 guess and not even use up my 2 guesses. That's what Pac is doing, he's not cheating by going over the limit, generally coming in lighter is to his disadvantage but he will use it as an advantage.

As for Pac weighing in at 150lb, well thats the catchweight limit they agreed to. JMW is 147-154lb, well within the rules.

I agree, it shouldnt be for a title but thats the technicalities of it anyways.

margo is a legitimate jr. middleweight. if he weighed 154lbs, then he made the limit. if he weighs above 154 he becomes a legitimate middleweight.

same with pacquiao, pac weighed 144lbs so that means he is a legitimate welterweight who opted to stay at a lighter weight to fight for a title north of his actual weightcalss just like armstrong did during his time. blame it on the sanctioning bodies you moron.

learn to understand the rules you idiot.

and by the way, STFU Noob!!! :D

Key words are exceed, over, and not more than. Also "without approval of the Commission."

And the ones with the over only determines the classes, NOT the fighting weights.

You can still fight over your weight as boxing tradition allows. Nothing there says otherwise.

    Heh. Unfortunately, that's true.

I think that the WBC took the decision that, if Pac was going to fight anyway, they may as well figure out a way to get paid from it, so they gave up the full title, as Arum and Pac told them to 'feck off' with the diamond belt nonsense before the Clottey fight.

I wouldn't be so sure when it comes to Texas. Their rules are more out-of-line with Nevada's than most.

I think the importance of "without approval of the Commission" is that they might possibly make an exception if there is not deemed to be too much danger, like in the case with this fight. There will be no "approval of the Commission" for an extreme case, you can be sure of that.

If we're talking about what can technically happen but won't be sanctioned, then anything can happen in a boxing ring.

I don't see how the keywords "exceed", "over" and "not more than" help your viewpoint.

This is from the Texas Athletic Commission's site, they have the same rule:

    (d) No contestant may engage in a contest where the weigh-in weight difference between contestants exceeds the allowance shown in the following "WEIGHT ALLOWANCE" schedule:
    (1) 112 lbs. or under--3 lbs.
    (2) 113-118 lbs.--4 lbs.
    (3) 119-126 lbs.--5 lbs.
    (4) 127-135 lbs.--6 lbs.
    (5) 136-147 lbs.--8 lbs.
    (6) 148-160 lbs.--10 lbs.
    (7) 161-175 lbs.--12 lbs.
    (8) 176-200 lbs.--15 lbs.
    (9) 201 lbs. or over--No limit
    http://www.license.state.tx.us/sports/sportsrules.htm#61105

Same rules are in the Washington Administritive Code. I couldn't find the rules for NYSAC.

Exceed means going over the limit, because there are only maximums. The over doesn't really help, it just shows the weight classes, but it does not stop people from lower classes from fighting higher weighing fighters, not more than implies a rule of an upper limit, which the final part saying "no limit" reinforces.

Because if you think that it means that "not more than" means only a difference of x pounds between two fighters, that means the heavyweight division allows fighters of two very different weights to fight each other (108 lbs vs 400 lbs). That point wholly crushes any implication that a lower limit exists.

    Check and mate.

Well the official difference between PAc and Margo is less than 6lbs. So they're ok if you look at (5) and (6)
