Every time Cotto was putting pressure on Clottey for some reason he stops attacking and runs all the way back to the other corner.

Can he clinch or hold so the other boxer doesn't win back the ground he worked to get?

He does that to catch his own breath, gets away in a hurry and waits,

I was pissed about this too man. I think it was the 5th round that he had Clottey on the ropes for well over a minute. Lot of punches hit the guard, but there were some good power shots getting through as well as straight shots that Cotto didn't get credit for.

Then in the later rounds Cotto would just back off and let Clottey come out. Those could have been easy rounds for Cotto, learning what he did in the 5th. I think the cut really messed him up in the fight. You could clearly see that eye was bloodshot, mostly from the blood dripping into it.

Exactly, i am not saying that he should just clinch ala John Ruiz or Hatton.

The best example could be Mosley against Margo.

cotto only likes to control the pace and fight in his rythm
and alot of times this creates inactivity and openings for his opponent
.....hence margarito/torres fighting bell to bell
even malignaggi capitalized on cotto's dead spots......for a short while.
i thought shane came up short in there fight as shane fights with explosive bursts but was tired and too inactive and cotto just nicked it.
pac and mayweather will give cotto FITS with speedy combos and the ability to adjust in a split second!!!!!!!
cotto gets his shots off then has to adjust position which too be honest is probably his only flaw!!!!!!!!

Cotto doesn't need to ****ing clinch, nor does any other fighter unless they're hurt or find themselves in an akward position. Cotto simply fought the wrong fight IMO. He would've been best served coming forward and pinning Clottey against the ropes where he's vulnerable right from the start of the fight.

Clinching is not a necessity and it wasn't necessary for Cotto in this fight.
