It’s a serious problem in the sport. There was so many intentional clinches from Franklin and the ref did nothing. There was one point where AJ was backing up with his left hand out and Franklin chased him down just to hold. It’s nothing but an illegal move that slows down the action but refs do nothing. It’s pretty ridiculous that guys like Ruiz and Klitschko have made careers out of it.
No ref wants to take away points for clinching. The next step after that is a DQ. Not a single ref alive has the nuts to give a HW champ like Klitschko a DQ loss and strip him of his belts for clinching.
That's the dynamic of a 6'2" Vs 6'6" heavyweight Fury can move and keep the distance to keep it a little interesting but a big plodder will always clinch like Wlad or AJ. Ruiz Jr had to trade and muscle AJ who is actually a very lazy clincher. See him looking at the crowd and his corner during the clinch? useless. The referee breaking them verbally was a dangerous tactic...AJ did hit during the break once, lucky it didn't happen before.
Nothing will ever be done about it because it's a tool that the money fighter can use to kill time and hold on against dangerous opponents. Wlad made a living out of clinching.
Why are you giving Joshua a pass for it? Franklin was ducking low a lot but Joshua was just leaning on him as much as he could. He was holding too btw.
You need refs to enforce it. In my opinion there should be a system where refs and judges get judged and graded for their performance which influences a ranking which leads to them getting another big fight anytime soon. Why should thet not be rewarded/punished on their merit like anyone else? Then you can have better and more enforced rules like no clinching. Wlad made a career out of 1/2 clinch and his fight usually sucked. But it was effective.
The hell if you don’t wanna get leaned on then stop manipulating the rules and holding every time you sense danger. It’s the sport of punching, anything else shouldn’t be allowed.
It was AJ clinching, kept grabbing Franklyn`s arm as Franklyn rushed in and kept grabbing him in a head lock, Franklyn had to push him off twice.
It's true that there was some more leaning from Joshua, but at some point, Franklin started to dip low into Joshua, which is also not legal. True, the excessive clinch and leaning is mostly in the heavyweight division, maybe because the more often big size differences, whatever, the referees are afraid of deducting a point, which would be enough, I think, in most cases, to make a fighter stop abusing it. Also are corrupt or are simply a bit incompetent. Entire teams must contest fights, for many reasons: bad referees, even it's about the clinching in a fight, bad judges. Talk more on interviews about, so to make it pop out as a problem.
I think this comment of yours disavow your own thread. I don't see that clinching is a big problem in boxing. Is it annoying sometimes? yes, sure. But it's very far away from being a big problem in boxing.
Start taking points away? Mills Lane didn't like clinching that much, he was a great referee. As you can see, Im working hard towards like number 522 right now LOL!
