Or do you think Cotto is too far gone at this point? If you think he can help Cotto, list some of the things you think he will improve in Miguel.
I think he can help him, but I doubt we'll see a huge change for this fight, it's gonna take a little while to break some of his habits. One thing I know Steward will do is make him use that jab like crazy. He's got a great jab, and Manny will make sure he's using it to his potential. He'll probably tighten up his defense some and teach him how to clinch.
I think Steward could improve most boxers. He will help Cotto utilise his power by improving his footwork and balance and he will help him improve his defence starting with basic stuff like footwork. I think we'll see Cotto significantly improve as he becomes almost a pure boxer with the ability to brawl if need be. Tactically stewards advice will be invaluable as well, as Cotto often made strategic errors before and during fights. I think Cotto, Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez will have a few great battles over the next couple of years
from the videos i've seen and interviews i read it looks like steward is working alot on his footwork, steward says he's trying to get him to not lean forward so much and instead balance on both legs also on the videos i see cotto throwing 4-5 jab combinations.
Manny would have to be able to help cotto in the confidence department, and tighten up cottos' defense. He helped lennox and wlad i'm sure he can bring something to the table. But will it be night and day? i don't think so, i would like to be wrong tho and see this work out.
I am almost hesitant to ask you for links to these videos (don't wanna see you post because of your goddamn avatar)...However, I've only seen two videos and one of them was all talk from Steward and no footage of Cotto, you got more vids?
I think Steward's biggest contribution will be psychologically. I think he can provide Cotto with much needed guidance and improve Cotto's overall mental state. He can also teach Cotto effective clinching and to effectively block uppercuts.
Sounds good man, careful with your browsing history - who knows how many times you browsed for that picture :tong
Of course he can "help him" a little. He may be able to teach him some techniques or correct some bad habits. He isn't gonna make him a different fighter though. Cotto has physical and mental limitations, as do every fighter. Floyd said it best, very good fighters do not become "great" no matter what the trainer has them do or tells them. I believe very good fighters can have "great" moments, and I'm not ruling that out for Cotto. But a "great" fighter he will never be. The truth is that Cotto was just never "great", he got overrated and exposed. End of it. He bullied fighters at 140, then he bullied the mental midget Judah, but once he stepped up and fought legit welters he was the one that got bullied and he was forced to become a "slick boxer" and that isn't what made him what he was.
steward has said that himself he said 70% of his camp with cotto will be him just talking to cotto, he said he spends time with cotto bonding, playing golf etc just to try understand him better.
I don't know who I feel more bad for in that situation, cotto is a smug little dick and Steward knows everything your gonna say before you even say it. For the record, if Cotto is training for his debut at 154 by playing golf, sleeping on his fat boyfriend Brian's shoulder and bonding with Manny Steward then he's gonna get his ass kicked....again!
100% resounding yes. Cotto is underated in the skill department. He can box and fight smart, he just needs the proper guidance and gameplan to approach a fight. Its unfortunate Manny didnt hook up with him earlier, because I think Cotto is starting to slip a little because of the ring wars hes been in. If Steward can hold him back and box a little more I think they can be succesful together, but Foreman is a very tough fight to start off with.
Look the mental approach to boxing is very important. Its all about Steward gaining his trust and getting him to believe in what Steward is saying, that way hes not wasting his time with him like say Mayweather Sr did with Hatton, who after all that training together went out and fought the same stupid kind of fight he always did in the past. Steward has to make significant adjustments to Cottos game, especially in this upcoming fight, so its important he has Cotto believing in the gameplan. Cotto already knows how to box and train, so its about believing in the process of what it will take to beat Foreman.
It doesn't change that: Cotto is a smug little ***** Steward HAS TO be annoying as hell to hang out with Cotto will NEVER be the great fighter many believed him to be
