I've noticed this too. A lot of the people who used to come to the gym but quit once they got beat up were also constantly trying to show off.

You can tell a lot about a person when they are getting beat up, and after they've been beaten up. If they are swinging back and still trying to win as they are getting clobbered and they are back the next day asking when they can do it again, then there is a person who is determined to win and won't give up. If you get a person who is getting beat up, and is just trying cowering in the ring and waiting until the bell rings, then they never come back, they never really wanted it in the first place.

I have to wonder what Kermit Cintron's first sparring session was like...

Not really because you don't if his first sparring session is the first time hes practised boxing. Everything in boxing develops the more you do it, some can be hopeless and improve every facet many times over to become great. Some might not even have much heart and develop to be able to handle the punches.

However certain things are blindly obvious, such as a great athlete, a kid who's as strong as an ox, tough as nails, etc

The biggest telling sign is 'does he come back after taking his first broken nose (insert damage)'. Boxing is a long dedicated journey of perseverance

As discouraging as it may sound to young hopefuls, PP, in my experience -- which dates back to the Peloponnesian Wars -- technique 'n ring savvy can get light years better, but several things are set in stone from day one:

    1. fight or flight response
    2. punching power
    3. hand speed
    4. beard.

If #1 isn't knee/jerk, I'd advise a kid to take up another sport, no matter how athletic he is.

Check out the videos of GP's amateur bouts. He may be inexperienced, but he's not lacking the all-important fight-back instinct. If anything, with his height 'n reach, he needn't go to war as much. But, that can be learned, not the other way 'round.

I'm no gym rat eirher but I'm the head coach at an amature club for 16 years and I know how good a boxer might be after a few rounds even at 10 or eleven. It's a lot of things, never thought about it before, but really it's about what boxing is about after the basics, courage, determination, confidenence, but to me it's about timing and co-cordiation and reaction. Never tried to put into words before but you allways know and are rarely wrong.

Tyson chose flight early in his life as he was a victim of bullying. Oscar DLH ran home crying the whole way the first time he had his nose popped with some gloves.:huh

If they show willingness to spar but not cockiness and arrogance. I'm so ready to spar yet and the trainers keep telling me "your next" after sparring sessions while I'm hitting the bag or doing the speedbag but I don't want to seem too pressed. All the experienced guys that have been there for years really aren't too offensive so I don't think I would take too much of a beating but they know how to pour it on lol. I don't know if I should ask to spar or not but soon I should be in a tournament late-summer and if I still don't spar this week I might ask the week after. I really don't know what to do but come prepared and be 100% everytime I show up to my gym. I have good defense, power, and ring smarts and am eager to show them off. I respect the hell outta everyone in my gym and in gyms across the world. Also to those without gyms, study fights!!!lol It'll really help.

You don't really know if you have good ring smarts until you have been in the ring and are forced to adapt at a quick pace and figure out the weaknesses as they come.
