Ali had the best jab. It was the quickest by far in relation to his weight division. He could double and triple it. Ali changed the power on it. If he wanted to annoy a guy they would be even faster with less on it. When Ali was serious he could put some smoke behind.

Fair questiom but Sonny was ill prepared to defemd the championship. Sonny was in 3 round shape but he did get some of his own jabs to connect. Sonny's was slower but one of his was probably worth 2 or 3 of Ali's.

Good point regarding the body jab. That punch doesnt get much attention except the boxer getting drilled with it. Other boxers use it but not with the purpose of Floyd. Getting hit with a few of those every round would take a little strength away. That sets up the clean punches uptop.

It's impossible to answer this question really. The jabs are far too different and work in support of too many styles. Someone is really going to tell me that Buchanan's jab is better than Harada's jab? When they're so dramatically different in what they're being used for? Even in cases where fighter a has outjabbed fighter b, that doesn't constitute their having a "better" jab in my opinion. I just watched Abner Mares and Yohnny Perez and in no way did either man prove the other's jab the better or worse but Mares used some jabbed feints to make a real difference in the contest. Does that count?

How can Ali's jab be better than Joe Louis's when Louis pulverised people with his and Ali "kept them off" and "charged up the power" with his? Someone can explain to me in great detail why Ray Robinson doesn't have the greatest jab of all time? Because it sure looks that way to me. Harold Johnson worked miracles behind his short jab, the "great technician" overbalanced to land the most fundamental of shots, but it worked for him, to the extent he'll probably get a mention.

People can't even agree on who has a better jab out of Holmes and Ali, the most watched jabbers in history probably; though I'd say Ezzard Charles arguably had a jab better than both of them.

Anyway, the answer is Canto

I think that Loughran's jab is underrated, as he made his whole (amazing) career on it. Fighters like Ali or Holmes were much bigger and more versatile overall, but they didn't have better defense than him. I wonder how can they have better jab then.

My actual pick is Carlos Ortiz.

His jab was incredibly dynamic. He could point score on the outside, he could pulverise on the inside, he could offset speedsters and outjab jabbers.

I was going to post something similar - how do you compare Hearns and Canto's jabs? They're different punches used for different purposes.

    Pernell Whitaker

Pernell used it to control pace and score. It was like he controlled the center with his King Pawn. In someways the jab was all he ever needed because he was so untouchable scoring with other punches didn’t matter.

    Special entry’s are:

    Marvelous Marvin Hagler

His powerful jab that hurt just as much as a solid right hand. He used his to get close enough to his opponent to clip them with his other hard and well timed shots.

    Roberto Duran

He used his the same as Whitaker timing and pace wise. He pinpointed your timing for defense, to get the reach for his offense and as a smoke screen to get inside and do damage.

    Fun Thread!

That is because you like to lose!

Just joking. I have no idea what to do with Queens Pawn, using it or defending.

Do you follow up with King Knight to defend the pawn?
