Can we safely say that Hunter sucks as a trainer?

Well, can we? Mares and Angulo looked WORSE under him, and Khan failed to impress last night.

suck is a strong term, I'd say John David Jackson proved in this one he is a far better trainer. In one fight took a dancing queen and turned him into a walk you down seek and destroy guy and it almost worked. Far bigger change than Hunter's multiple rounds of pro work with Khan

It's all styles. Against guys like Paulie and Judah, Khan dominated them under Roach. Roach is an offensive trainer, I think Roach version of Khan would have whooped Algieri last night far worse. Hunter is defense oriented, so Khan under him when fighting guys like Garcia would be much better.

You have to give Algieri major credit too. The guy seems to learn very quick, and doesn't let his ego get in the way. The guys attitude is what every trainer hopes his fighter has.

To only pick up boxing recently from a kickboxing background and take on an olympic silver medalist, he is a very fast learner. Would be interesting to see if he has a learning cap or he would just keep getting better.

If Khan was with Roach last night he would have lost.

Algieri did what Peterson did but had more success at range.

Virgil constantly keeping Khan in check making sure he is focussed on Algieri.

Khan would have overlooked him otherwise and maybe even lost. Virgil saved Khan's ass last night and Khan knows it.

No. A trainer is only as good as the fighters he's training. Angelo and Mares both ****ing suck ass and Khan is an eggshell chinned fraud.

:nod well said. Even putting aside the the fact he hasn't been boxing all that long who could have expected Chris to take to a complete 180 of his style so well? WAR JULIO CAESAR ALGIERI!!! :ibutt

But about Hunter... Ward's a special talent with special ring intelligence so it's difficult to say how much credit Virgil deserves for his success. Angulo and Mares were both a little past it when they joined up with Virgil. Khan just seems like a complete an idiot who I can't imagine being a particularly good student. Andrade should be the test case: he's young and he's already much closer to the style that Virgil wants to teach than Angulo or Khan have ever been. If FLoyd were open to fighting anyone currently campaigning from 140-154 regardless of business considerations I think Andrade would already be his toughest test.

    No, we can't.

The man created Andre Ward from the ground up. That's like...the definition of a good trainer. Not his fault that sh!tty boxers always come to him to fix their problems. That's not easy to do.

But Ward is one of those fighters who would be great no matter who trained him.
