I cannot prove that they do, but it is really amazing how people, fighters in general grow to be 6"9. It must be the organic food?

Exactly. The idea that everyone is cheating is bull****. Particularly in regards to steroids, etc. This is a sport that for generations believed that being muscle bound was a drag on ability and that lifting weights would ruin a fighter. A lot of fighters and trainers still believe that to degree. We see plenty of fighters today where technique, not physical attributes, is their secret to success. But when you have fighters like Holyfield and Jones, two guys who actually got caught cheating jumping up in weight and looking ridiculously ripped throughout it defies belief. Ask any bodybuilder who isnt on steroids if you can gain thirty or forty pounds of ripped muscle like these guys do while competing in a sport that burns through calories like wildfire. Its not happening. There are steroid cheats out there and PED users but I dont believe its across the board and I dont believe that the PED users do it for every fight. I think thats why you saw guys like Holyfield and Mosley turn in such ho-hum performances sometimes. These guys could run so hot and cold that Holyfield had to come up with a freaking miracle cure from jesus to pretend his past sub par performances werent the result of cycling on and off steroids.

PEDs aren't just about gaining muscle, though. They help a lot with recuperation and let you train harder than you otherwise would without burning out/injuring yourself. That's very valuable whether you want to add muscle or not.

Im not disputing that but even so the idea that EVERYONE using PEDs is ridiculous. And this thread stated steroids specifically. Steroids, even those prescribed to supposedly heal injuries have the added side effect of weight gain. And lets be real, if a boxer is abusing steroids illegally 9 times out of 10 hes doing it either to gain strength or to increase his mass without taking a performance hit. James Toney, a former MW, can cry all he wants that he was using steroids to recover from injuries but when he puts on 60 pounds and competes with a guy like Sam Peter anyone with half a brain knows why he was taking steroids.

No, steroids by themselves doesn't lead to weight gain. You have to up your caloric intake to gain mass. But, yes, many who take steroids gain mass.

But they will help your quickness, stamina, everything, if you're training and eating right. It will definitely be a big asset for a boxer. And my guess is that today's steroids will have a lot less side effects than old school stuff.

How many that uses them... Hard to say. I know that if I felt that many others were taking and my career as well as safety was on the line, I'd be damned tempted to use myself if I could to so without getting caught. And we know that you can do it without testing positive.

This is not true. Ask anyone who has taken steroids for a muscle injury, or post op, bursitis, etc if they altered their diet yet gained weight. Steroids absolutely do cause weight gain. Its hormone therapy. Ask anyone who has ever undergone any kind of hormone therapy if the way their body processed and used calories didnt change. Studies have shown that even among non athletes, or even couch potatos that anabolic steroid use leads to an increase in lean muscle mass without any alter to diet, exercise, or lifestyle. Your activities and how you use them absolutely effect that of course but thats true of anyone using steroids or not. Thats why steroids even effects the size of muscles typically not effected by caloric intake such as jaw muscles.

Actually what I've seen is that steroids do not effect strength without exercise. And since steroids do not contain any energy they do not by themselves increase weight, as far as I know. But I do not doubt that they stimulate caloric intake and thereby often lead to gain in mass. If one is disciplined enough though and check their caloric intake the should not gain mass, though.

Anyhow, even if we assume that most athletes that take steroids do gain muscle mass, so? Most fighters below HW climb in weight classes and HWs are of course heavier than pre steroids. HWs growth in size correlate quite well with when steroids started getting into sports.

I was definitely being the pedantic one my friend. I'm just a stickler for facts. However I think an sportsman will bend their rules as much as they can get away with.

Again, this is absolutely incorrect and there is no study that supports this. In fact there is a very good book on steroids written by a doctor who in the course of researching them actually took them himself in order to study the effects. The first thing he noticed about steroids: His vision got better. Why? Because his eye muscles got stronger. Any ophthalmologist will tell you that there are no exercises that strengthen the eye muscles to improve vision. So yes, steroids will effect strength without exercise. Im not sure where you are getting your data from (I suspect you are making it up to suit your argument) but regardless, its incorrect.

Yes, I did a quick check and it does seem you're right that steroid use increases strength even without exercise. That it supposedly didn't was old stuff that I remembered that probably is obsolete now.

But what argument would I "make it up to suit"?

Kind of a childish accusations to make.

I don't care who takes what.
I judge the fighters on how well they box and fight, and how much heart they have. PEDs are a fact of life in just about every sport worth watching now.

I'm not going to give obvious steroids users "p4p" credit for "moving up the weights" but I don't give fighters "p4p" credit for that anyway. If you weigh 158 pounds you get judged as a middleweight, no excuses. If you weigh 220, you get judged as a 220 pound heavyweight, I don't give a **** what you used to weigh.

Tyson Fury, Roy Jones Jr., Evander Holyfield, James Toney ..... these guys can fight.
Jarrell Miller, Shannon Briggs ...... just big and fairly useless.
