Yes...if Vlad wants to break that record, it's his for the taking. Klitschko dominance is here to stay. For a while, at least...

Bull****! Thompson gave Vlad a tough fight for the first 5 or 6 rounds. I think Thompson may have won a round or two. I say Thompson is a worthy challenger, possibly even the best U.S. heavyweight today. It's not Vlad's or Thompson's fault that Vlad is running out of worthy challengers...

He can certainly break the record if we allow defences of straps. Not if we're interested in the undisputed HW title.

Watch again!! Thompson won ZERO rounds. :deal:deal

ALSO, you call 40 YEAR OLD Thompson a "worthy challenger" :nut - BUT since getting BATTERED :ko by Wladdy in 2008, which of his 5 wins over UNRANKED (by Ring) poor competition makes him so worthy of another hopeless title shot?? Adnan Serin? Chazz? Beck? Paul Marinaccio? Maurice Harris? :huh

The other thing is that he's never met his #1 contender

Ok MCgrain, when do you starting counting Wladdy's defences of a "Undisputed" nature??

When he beat Russ Chagaev?? So would you say he only has 5 title defences - not 16?? :think:think

WBC means more then Ring now? :huh

You could argue for beginnig the count after Chagaev...depends upon how much faith you have in Ring I suppose.

Did he meet his #1 contender when his brother was retired?

They are both been proven corrupt in the past. Both have their own agendas and political pressures...

After Lewis retired, you could only have a world champion when the two best generally recognized fighters, fight each other. There has yet to be a consensus on this happening.

We will never see an undisputed heavyweight champion again, except for maybe occasional short (several months) title reigns. For this reason, we have to regard the obvious "best" beltholder as the equivalent of an undisputed champ. That's Vlad.

Paper titles should not be counted. Like I said in another thread, nobody would argue that Artur Grigorian defended the lightweight title 17 and nor should they.

You could argue that Wlad still isn't the undisputed champion because he's not fought Vitali. I think there does have to be some leeway though, so I'd argue he's been the true champion since he beat Chagaev.

That said, Wlad will only be 42 by the time he reaches this record, so it's not impossible. Just unlikely. I don't consider him half way there though.

Do you guys treat Larry "Habitual Ducker" Holmes the same??

Holmes was only ever a single alphabet beltholder, never unifying. :deal

Holmes only ever held 1 abc belt at a time, WBC, then stripped for fighting 10-0 Marvis Frazier, But lucky for Larry, IBF invented a new belt And gave it him. And he never even held teh WBA title.

So how many "undisputed" world title defences does Holmes have? Or does the Ring Mag title make Holmes the Champ, but not Wladdy?? :huh

Wlad's defences should be counted from beating Byrd. That's when he became the number 1 HW and that's a true barometer of comparison.

I think he's on 11 is he not? so he needs another 14.

3 fights a year, 5 more years? big ask. very big ask.

If he does, he's a lock for my top 3.
