I can't believe the morons saying Wlad's only got a shot because of the level of competition being so poor. I have news for you folks, Joe Louis' era was much worse, so worse he fought the infamous "bum of the month" club.

Still doesn't change the fact that Louis was the best Heavyweight ever but let's keep it in perspective folks.

    :huh

If his era was much worse than Wladimir's, how could you realistically rate him at the greatest heavyweight of all time? Especially when Ali has a far superior resume as compared to Louis...

............and yes, Ali fought in arguably the best Heavyweight era ever and he did win against that level of competition. But for me he didn't fight the same way, with the same domination or one punch power. Ali was provbably the fastest Heavy ever, and he did whatever was needed to win.

Wlad doesnt have the mental abiltiy to do it, even if he had won the title younger.

Joe was the kind of guy who would never take a sick day and always finish the job, no matter what, and you could always rely on him to turn up. Wlad doesnt have tha, he has days and opponents when he is at sea, so he can never do what Louis did.

I would tend to disagree with this. Even some of Wladimir's most ardent detractors (grudgingly) admit that he has an unbelievable work ethic. In addition, he treats all of his opponents as if they were his toughest challenge yet, when in most cases this is not the truth.

I think he can do it, given how poor the division is at the moment. There are no real challengers out there that look promising so unless Wlad gets old, he will dominate for a long time.

He needs a lot more defences though. He's only been the true champion since he beat Ruslan Chagaev. Nobody would argue that Artur Grigorian deserves praise for being a long time world champion and for this same reason, Wlad doesn't deserve to be even close to Joe Louis' record right now. Wlad has defended the true heavyweight title 4 times and anything before that was fragmented, pointless, paper title bull****.

So, yes, Wlad can do it but if he fights three times a year, that means he'll have to rule until he's 42. Possible, but it will be hard.

I was thinking that Wlad sometimes is exposed because he doesnt have the right fight plan in the ring (eg v Lennoxs, where he threw away the fight by not defending himself, rather stupidly, I think), and more preparation could have won him the fight. But on second thoughts, I think you are right, Wlad has got the right preparations, he just doesnt have the ringcraft or Plan B that Loius had in being able to win fights he is losing, and hes simply not good enough to go unbeaten against good fighters for years.

In all honesty, the threadis a bit of a joke anyway. prime champ Wlad loses whenever he fights a bona fide proper champion, prime champ Louis doesnt. Louis always found a way to win, without waiting till his opponens were 40, I would add.

Just for clarification, it was Vitali, and not Wladimir that fought Lennox Lewis. Few opponents have forced Wladimir to resort to a plan B, so this is somewhat of an unknown. Discussion about the subjective quality of his opposition aside, Wladimir has in fact gone unbeaten against good (but not necessarily great) opposition since 2004, exactly your stated criteria.

Wlad's would be a bogus record. Louis attained his feat with ONE HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION! And the title defenses were CONSECUTIVE! When will fight fans stop falling for these counterfeit "records." The writer should not give this foolishness the recognition of column space.
