PBF is at the top of his game. Cotto needs one or two more "Big Fights". Someone his own size such as Margo, he should win at this stage. A fight with Paul Williams might be "ugly" and boring. So fight Margo, then take a "tuneup" and wait for PBF to make up his mind to prove PBF is the best. PBF waits too long, then it might be himself that gets steamrolled if they ever get in the ring.
basically you are saying that cotto is not ready for mayweather and let mayweather age a bit. imo, mayweather and cotto should fight now because it would be the biggest fight out there. mayweather to seal his legacy and cotto to achieve greatness. if pacquiao and marquez are giving the fans what they want, why not mayweather and cotto?
You are right..it is the biggest fight...and I want to see it too. But the question is when is Cotto ready? Last time I saw him he was in the retreat mode the last 3 rounds against Mosley. If PBF really had "huevos" he would say: "Let's take care of the kid now before he gets any better". But boxing is "business" and what goes on in backrooms, sometimes doesn't make a lot of sense.
imo, cotto is ready. no need for fights aginst someone like margarito or williams. but if he feels on taking some other first, i won't blame him escpecially if he takes on a bigger money fight in dela hoya.
I've seen too many people bring up Cotto fighting off the backfoot in the final 3 rounds against Mosley and equate it with how he would fight against Mayweather. Mosley is extremely strong. Perhaps physically, he is the strongest welterweight out there. He started pushing Cotto back, using his strength, and essentially turned into a slugger (which is the style to use against a swarmer/pressure fighter). Cotto adjusted to this, and instead of fighting fire with fire, fought smart and decided to move. Because Cotto isn't a great boxer off the backfoot, he moved, and picked certain opportunities to counter. In many of these rounds, he was still the one landing the cleaner/effective punches. Against Mayweather, Cotto wouldn't have to worry about Mayweather standing toe to toe and trying to muscle him around/push him back. He would most certainly be pressuring and relentlessly attacking him. Cotto is smart enough not to fight a completely tactical fight with Mayweather or try and counter him from the outside, because Mayweather's speed and defense will make it almost impossible. Instead, Cotto would be tactically working his way on the inside.
some of you use the excuse that Cotto should get 2 more fight before facing Floyd...so what about Bruseles, Gatti, Baldomir and Judah...they were ready, but Cotto isn't? That's some stupid logic if you ask me.
That's what I'm talking about - at this time, Miguel Angel Cotto cannot outwork Floyd Mayweather and even Paul Williams for two different reasons - Mayweather is very much more effective from his defensive stance than Cotto can be out on offense and Williams has too much of a freakish punch output. brooklyn1550, you know I gat respect 4 ya and 4 Miguel, but this is the scientific stuff we're talkin about here, no too much love 4 this particular individual or that other person. How can Cotto beat Mayweather to the punch? Not surely so slow getting off and with such a porous defense like he showed startin out against Judah... Then, he did that number on Shane cause the man was right in front of him and trading all the time - still Margo can take Cotto's faster hooks and right hands and bust him up with left uppercuts and hooks of his own, I believe. You or anyone else are not going to make me believe that Williams does not outpunch Cotto like he did to Margo - what is Miguel gonna do, swing hard to the midsection as Paul gets 3 or 4 punches on his face and in between? That's what I'm talkin about...
Cotto may indeed tunr out to be the best, but until he or someone beats Floyd, Mayweather remains No.1, P4P. I will say that Cotto-Mayweather is the one fight I would choose to happen, if I had to choose only one for 2008! What a clash of styles, personalities that would be!
