I have heard 2 different opinions 1) When they lift your corneal flap, the flap never fully heals and it will always be at a higher risk for becoming dislodged. Contact sports are not recommended ever after Lasik 2) It's just like any other surgery that takes 6-12 months to heal from and you need to lay off contact sports for a period of time until the corneal flap is stable. Anyone ever heard of the flap becoming dislodged before or know what the risk is? PRK is the eye surgery that doesn't butcher the flap, but many people are better candidates for Lasik and Lasik is said to have less complications.
Knew a guy once who did it... His eye didnt get messed up. However, just ask a few doctors, see what they think.
But even if your eye doesn't get messed up the flap is weakened. I would like to learn what the protocol is with contact sports.
I was advised (by a doctor) that it is totally fine. If for example I was doing mma then there would be a significant risk, because a finger could scrape the eye and dislodge the lens (flap). A blow from a blunt /soft instrument such as a boxing glove is very unlikely to do this. I been boxing for years and have had no trouble. Just don't let the association doctors knows because from what I understand they won't allow you to box.
I'm glad someone posted this I'll be having it done to me hopefully in February my doctor said few months off would be preferable but I should be just fine.
I had the surgery. You cant get sweat in your eye for about a week. So first thing is taking a week off from physical activity completely. Then I took an additional three weeks off from sparring while continuing training. Went back to sparring with no problem.
I'm pretty sure that Frank Bruno had this surgery.. it delayed him turning professional but eventually he did.. It may not be this surgery though, have a read around and see if you can find out.
People who engage in sports like boxing can have laser eye surgery with excellent results. If you are interested, take proper advice from your doctor. Thanks Doctorc.in
The solution its to get PRK. The results are as good as Lasik but there is no loss in eye integrity. The only down side is that the recovery time from PRK is longer.
