choking can also occur when you are over thinking instead of doing,eg when you are supposed to throw a punch but miss your chance as you thought about it too long. also your mind can go blank in a fight and you lose the urge, this time is dangerous.
Oh hell yeah! One of the funniest things I've seen was when Epifanio Mendoza came to challenge for Chad Dawson, and Mendoza hired Judah Sr. for help with the fight. After Mendoza came back to the corner and Judah started all that " MAN, YOU GOTTA POP HIM, ZING, BAM, POW,!!" throwin' more punches than the fighters do ****, dudes face was priceless. I never laughed so hard.
Big John Tate was pitching a shutout going into round 15 with Mike Weaver, then boom....tiimmbeeeeer.......Weaver KO's Tate with 1 punch. Those previously sited examples of Tyson vs Spinks, Liston vs Patterson are great examples too.
I'd say it probably does occur more than we might think, but only the fighter knows about it. Maybe fighter A sees something all night long but just can't pull the trigger on fighter B's opening. ?? Much easier to tell with other sports. missed putts, etc.
Roy against Calzaghe. Don't think it was choking. But, funny how Roy seemed to give up so early into the fight.
some fairly recent and possibly obscure ones manfredo - bika valuev - holyfield augustus against a ton of opponants pavlik - hopkins (schooled maybe but still pavlik just wasnt work that night) oakey - cleverly arthur - cook it's hard to really know if they are choking or not because boxing is all about making people choke and bending them to your will.
:good LMAO. This is very true. I have heard he talk almost in code and say you gotta throw more. U know Biff bof boom. Imagine being a fighter and coming back at the end of the round to that ****. Some times world class fighters need a world class trainer. Applies in most sports.
I think most cases where you can argue that a boxer choked overlaps with them doing something really stupid. One of my favorite examples is the fight where Nate Campbell was ahead and dropped his hands to taunt his opponent and give him a free shot. The other guy look at Campbell for a second as if to say "Seriously?" then wound up and hit him with a monster shot that put Nate down for the 10 count.
Yes, it can happen easily. A fighter has to let his nervousness be his fuel and not his demise, it also makes you focus a whole lot more.
Weird, great minds must think alike. As I read your thread title I thought about tennis and the great Jimmy Connors putting his hand around his throat after he backed off of a shot and lost the point. Maybe choke in the first round but once the guy nails you, you either get defensive real quick and start looking for openings or go after him. Physical pain, blows to the head, fat lips, etc. tend to take psychology out of the picture. It's kill or be killed. It's why we watch it.
