Can you justify putting Floyd Mayweather Jr in a top 10 ATG list?

NO way

 

No. He is barely in the top 20 for me.

Several fighters have gone on to 48-0 (JCC, Jimmy Wilde, Willie Pep, Marciano).

There have also been other fighters that have fought a lot more than Floyd and should be credited even if they have a few losses (SRR, Greb, Armstrong).

He also seems to have avoided certain fighters that would have gave him a stylistic problem (Margo, Paul Williams, Winky Wright).

No way. I don't do atg lists and stuff like that, I leave that for the people who are paid to do it, but I won't give him a second thought once he is gone. No memorable fights, punches, rounds, anything like that. Yawn

Yes I think you can at 135, 140, or 147 pounds. Mayweather's skills are undeniable. I think his stock will go up after Cotto vs Alverez as Mayweather defeated both men.

Mayweather is knocking on the door at being 50-0 with wins over at least 4 men who are or will make the hall of fame. That's tough to beat.

If Mayweather wasn't a criminal outside the ring, and more respectful toward the media, he'd rate much higher.

 

Yes. He's been ranked top 10 p4p in the world now for about 15 years and #1 for roughly 7 or 8 years. Never lost, has 25 title fight wins, belts in 5 divisions and a few wins over future hall of fame men. He holds the all time record for most career earnings which is unheard of for anyone below heavyweight and at 39 years old is still looking amazing. I've never liked his public image, which in all honesty is probably why so many try to rate him down. But If anyone thinks that there are literally TEN fighters who should rank ahead of Floyd on an all time p4p list, then those men surely must be Gods.

 

Not Gods, just great fighters. Ten would be a gross underestimate, if we're talking about p4p !

Did you think he "looked amazing" in his last fight ? I didn't.

 

Why does a 38 year old fighter who is taking on the toughest opponent of his career have to look "amazing" to get credit for the win? How amazing did Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Robinson, Armstrong, Louis, or Ali look at 38 years old and while fighting another p4p giant?

What he's doing is getting close to unprecedented. Titles from Super Featherweight to Super Welterweight. If Alvarez beats Cotto, Mayweather will have two wins over lineal Middleweight champs.

He's already beaten three Hall of Famers (Hernandez, Gatti and De La Hoya). How many HOFers will he have wins over 20 years from now? (Cotto's going in. Canela may. Marquez certainly will. Pacquiao will. Mosley and Hatton are possibilities.)

He's broken PPV records that may take - seriously - another 50 years or more to top. (Roughly $200 million for one fight?)

Next year, it'll be 20 YEARS since he lost a fight (in the Olympics, controversially). Unbeaten in 20 years!

I can't stand the guy. But to not rate Mayweather and rate a guy like, let's say, Pernell Whitaker, would be ridiculous.

Anyway, now you brought it up, that fight sucked, looked a bit fake on both sides to me, and, no, I cannot believe 2015 Pacquiao was ever his toughest opponent, and if he really is, that just says how weak Mayweather's resume must be.
And I was saying all this before the fight.
That fight seemed fraudulent hype going in, and more so when it actually occurred.

 

He's sure as hell is looking as good as anyone can be at that age and still is ranked #1 p4p. Do you really think his resume is "weak?" that's outrageous if you do. And BTW if Pac had won that fight, something tells me you wouldn't be honking about it being fraudulent..
